Brake Caliper

Removal and Installation

WARNING: Before beginning any service procedure in this article, refer to Safety Warnings in SERVICE INFORMATION . Failure to
follow this instruction may result in serious personal injury.

NOTE: Do not spill brake fluid on painted or plastic surfaces or damage to surface may occur. If brake fluid is spilled onto a
painted or plastic surface, immediately wash the surface with water.

NOTE: Removal steps in this procedure may contain installation details.

NOTE: F250, F350 shown, F450, F550 similar.

1. Remove the wheel and tire. Refer to WHEELS AND TIRES .


2. To install, tighten to 48 Nm (35 lb-ft).

3. To install, on F-250, F-350, tighten to 75 Nm (55 lb-ft).


To install, on F-450, F-550, tighten to 63 Nm (46 lb-ft).

Installation
NOTE: Tighten the bottom caliper bolt before tightening the top caliper bolt and make sure the caliper pin boots are

1. correctly seated or damage to guide pins may occur.

To install, reverse the removal procedure.


2. Bleed the brake caliper. Refer to Component Bleeding in BRAKE SYSTEM - GENERAL INFORMATION .

Removal

NOTE: Removal steps in this procedure may contain installation details.

NOTE: F250, F350 shown, F450, F550 similar.

1. Remove the brake pads. Refer to BRAKE PADS.


2. To install F-250, F-350, tighten the new bolts to 225 Nm (166 lb-ft).
To install F-450, F-550, tighten the new bolts to 350 Nm (258 lb-ft).

Installation

1. To install, reverse the removal procedure.

Brake Disc

Removal

Vehicles with twin I-beam axle

1. The brake disc and wheel hub are an assembly on vehicles with twin I-beam axle. To remove the brake disc, refer to Wheel Bearing
and Wheel Hub-F250, F350 in FRONT SUSPENSION - REAR WHEEL DRIVE (RWD) .
Vehicles with monobeam axle
2. Remove the wheel and tire. Refer to WHEELS AND TIRES .

NOTE: Do not allow the brake caliper to hang from the brake hose or damage to the hose can occur.

Relocate and support the component.


To install, on F-250, F-350, tighten to 225 Nm (166 lb-ft).
To install, on F-450, F-550, tighten to 350 Nm (258 lb-ft).

4. NOTE: If equipped with DRW .

Marker.
To install, tighten to 176 Nm (130 lb-ft).

6. Visual check. Sandpaper. Clean the specified component with the specified material/cleaner.

7. Apply the specified material/lubricant with a brush.

Installation

1. To install, reverse the removal procedure.

Brake Disc Shield

Vehicles with monobeam axle


1. Remove the wheel bearing and wheel hub. Refer to FRONT SUSPENSION - FOUR WHEEL DRIVE (4WD) .

Vehicles with twin I-beam axle


3. Remove the brake disc. Refer to BRAKE DISC.
4. To install, tighten to 15 Nm (133 lb-in).

Installation

1. To install, reverse the removal procedure.

Brake Flexible Hose

Removal

All vehicles

1. To install, tighten to 48 Nm (35 lb-ft).

Vehicles with twin I-beam axle


2. To install, tighten the brake hose bracket-to-frame bolt to 48 Nm (35 lb-ft).
To install, tighten the brake tube fitting to 20 Nm (177 lb-in).
To install, tighten the stabilizer bar link nut to 115 Nm (85 lb-ft).

Vehicles with monobeam axle

3. To install, tighten the brake hose bracket-to-frame bolt to 48 Nm (35 lb-ft).


To install, tighten the brake tube fitting to 20 Nm (177 lb-in).
To install, tighten the brake hose bracket-to-spring seat bolt to 18 Nm (159 lb-in).

Installation
1. To install reverse the removal procedure.
Bleed the brake caliper. For additional information, refer to Component Bleeding in BRAKE SYSTEM - GENERAL
INFORMATION .

Removal

follow this instruction may result in serious personal injury.

NOTE: Do not allow grease, oil, brake fluid or other contaminants to contact the pad lining material. Do not install contaminated
pads or damage to components may occur.

NOTE: Removal steps in this procedure may contain installation details.

NOTE: F250, F350 shown, F450, F550 similar.

1. Remove the wheel and tire. Refer to WHEELS AND TIRES .

2. NOTE: Do not pry in the caliper sight hole to retract the pistons as this can damage the pistons and boots.

NOTE: Do not allow the brake caliper and anchor plate assembly to hang from the brake hose or damage to the hose can
occur.

Relocate and support the component.


To install, on F-250, F-350, tighten to 76 Nm (56 lb-ft).
To install, on F-450, F-550, tighten to 63 Nm (46 lb-ft).

Installation

2. Depress the brake pedal several times, check the brake fluid level in the brake fluid reservoir and add the specified brake fluid as
necessary.
