PART A-OBJECTIVE
Q1. Read the following passage and answer the questions that follow
(a) For a long time there has been a gender difference between men and 10×1=10
women in life and social environment. Women have been fighting for
equality rights and fair treatment and it has almost been achieved. Even
though there are more opportunities today there is still prejudice and
partially, it comes from the fact that men and women are different not only
biologically but mentally as well. Gender plays a differential role in society
and communication which is needed to attain certain results.

(b) Stereotypes pertaining to male superiority and female submissiveness could

be traced to earlier ages where assigned roles were needed as survival
measures. But, can we today see a swing away from these stereotypes, or
have they established a stranglehold on our perceptions? In this gendered
world, we continue to live with notions that one's gender determines one's
skills and preferences, from toys and colours to career choices. So the girl
child will be presented with a Barbie doll, while the boy child will receive a
Lego set.

(c) Does that mean that our brains are different? This myth has been exploded
by a British professor of cognitive neuroimaging. Her research attempts to
establish how these stereotypes mould our ideas of ourselves. She examines
how science has been misinterpreted or misused to ask the wrong
questions, instead of challenging the status quo. She urges us to move
beyond a binary view of people's brains and instead to see these as highly
individualised, profoundly adaptable, and full of unbounded potential. Her
conclusive findings establish that no brain differences can be found that are
solely gender related. In other words, modern neuroscientists have
identified no decisive category-defining differences between the brains of
men and women.

(d) As a result of these findings we owe it to ourselves to dump the myths and
look at ourselves afresh. We need to recognise that the male and female
brain debate is a distraction, besides being based on inaccuracies. It is
possibly harmful too, because it can be used as a hook to justify saying there
is no point in girls doing science because they do not have a science brain;
or compelling boys to opt for science because their brains are shaped for
that subject. It can also condemn boys for being emotional, as this is seen as
a feminine trait. And, most dangerous of all, to proclaim that boys, not girls,
are meant to lead.

Q2. Read the following passage carefully and answer the questions that

10×1=10
The graph below shows how much money people are willing to spend on their
headphones, earphones or air pods/ i pods.

Few years ago, most people were happy using earphones to listen to their music
on their portable cassette players or listening to CDs on their Discman.
However, of these now seen pretty cumbersome gadgets to use while jogging,
exercising or cycling. Such persons need something light in weight and more
portable.

Recently, especially in cities and towns, all this has changed. The techno-battle
raging today is not between bulky cassette players and Discmans anymore.
Now, it is between the light and tiny gadgets called iPods, air pods and MP3
players. One of the reasons for their popularity is the technology they are based
on, which allows one to store lots of songs and music on such small devices.

The main difference between iPods, air pods and MP3 players is the technology
they used to compress audio files. Digital audio and video compression
standards were formed by the moving picture experts group (MPEG ). Mp3 is a
part of the standard. Therefore, what we popular really understand as mp3 is
not actually a type of file but a technology for compressing sound files into
smaller ones.

Apple is the company that created the iPod. Its audio-video compression
technique is based on another standard called MPEG-4. As a result, the main
difference between mp3 players and i pods is the format in which the audio
files are stored and compressed.

The name iPod now is like the name “Xerox”. People use “Xerox” as a synonym
for photocopying without realizing that it is a brand name. Similarly, when
someone asks for an iPod, they may be using the term broadly and actually
referring to miniature music system. They might not mean the actual product
made by apple. Mp3 players have become a rage because computer music files
are easy to share copy and transfer from one computer system to another.
