Class 10 - Science
Time Allowed: 3 hours Maximum Marks: 80

General Instructions:

1. This question paper consists of 39 questions in 5 sections.

2. All questions are compulsory. However, an internal choice is provided in some questions. A student is expected to

attempt only one of these questions.

3. Section A consists of 20 objective-type questions carrying 1 mark each.

4. Section B consists of 6 Very Short questions carrying 02 marks each. Answers to these questions should be in the

range of 30 to 50 words.

5. Section C consists of 7 Short Answer type questions carrying 03 marks each. Answers to these questions should

be in the range of 50 to 80 words.

6. Section D consists of 3 Long Answer type questions carrying 05 marks each. Answers to these questions should

be in the range of 80 to 120 words.

7. Section E consists of 3 source-based/case-based units of assessment of 04 marks each with sub-parts.

37. Read the following text carefully and answer the questions that follow: [4]
Carbon compounds can be easily oxidised on combustion. In addition to this complete oxidation, we have
reactions in which alcohols are converted to carboxylic acids.We see that some substances are capable of adding
oxygen to others. These substances are known as oxidising agents. Also some compounds are capable of adding
hydrogen. These substances are known as reducing agents.

38. Read the following text carefully and answer the questions that follow: [4]
In some families, either rural or urban, females are tortured for giving birth to a female child. They do not seem
to understand the scientific reason behind the birth of a boy or a girl. In fact the mother is not responsible for the
sex of the child and it has been genetically proved that the sex of a newborn is determined by what the child
inherits from the father.
i. State the basis on which the sex of a newborn baby is determined in humans. (1)
ii. Why is the pair of sex chromosomes called a mismatched pair in males? (1)
iii. How is the original number of chromosomes present in the parents restored in the progeny? (2)

39. Read the following text carefully and answer the questions that follow: [4]
Two or more resistances are connected in series or in parallel or both, depending upon whether we want to
increase or decrease the circuit resistance.

The two or more resistances are said to be connected in series if the current flowing through each resistor is the
same.
i. When the three resistors each of resistance R ohm are connected in series then what will be the equivalent
resistance? (1)
ii. There is a wire of length 20 cm and having resistance 20 Ω cut into 4 equal pieces and then joined in series.
What is equivalent resistance? (1)
iii. In the following circuit, find the equivalent resistance between A and B (R = 2Ω ) (2)
