Sustainable Fertilizer and Agriculture
¨ Sustainable Fertilizer and Agriculture
Over the years, India has seen significant progress in the production of different varieties of crops grown
in India, although year-on-year variations do exist in production of crops in the country. Agriculture has
been witnessing challenges of climate change, deterioration of soil health, depletion of natural and water
resources, fragmentation of land holdings, decline in organic carbon, low nutrient use efficiency due to
imbalance in use of nutrients, etc. However, sustainable growth in agriculture production is necessary
to meet the growing need of food, feed, fibre and fuel for the burgeoning population of the country.
Towards this, adoption of climate-smart agriculture, precision agriculture AI/machine learning solutions
and balanced applications of fertilizers/new products is necessary.
Use of fertilizers is inter-linked to agriculture production as they provide nutrients/food to the plants.
India is heavily dependent on imports for raw materials/ intermediates/ feedstock to produce fertilizers.
As an industry collective, we have to put in sincere efforts to reduce our import dependence. Ensuring
sustainability in existing NH3-urea and complex fertilizer plants will be of prime importance. Feasibility of
use of renewable energy in fertilizer production needs to be explored. Necessity of policy reforms in the
sector is also desirable to align the goals of sustainable development. Understanding of global fertilizer
market/prices and future outlook play an important role in strategic import planning for the country.
The prospects of digital marketing and innovative strategies in the marketing of agri-inputs are to be
understood. India has taken a lead in production and use of nano technology based fertilizers which
supplement nutrient requirement of crops.
It is in this context that this year’s Seminar is devoted to the theme Sustainable Fertilizer and Agriculture.
The experiences of the experts from world/India will be useful for devising strategies for sustainable
growth in fertilizer and agriculture sectors.
• Find solutions to the problems faced by the fertilizer industry and agriculture;
• Promote consideration and discussion of all issues that contribute to sound agricultural
practices.
The Indian fertilizer industry is highly complex and technology driven consisting of plants with
varying capacity, technology, vintage and product range. With nearly 700 members comprising
Active, Associate, Overseas Associate and Technical and Professional, FAI provides the necessary
support for meeting the challenges facing the Industry.
