FAI ANNUAL SEMINAR 2024

4 – 6 December 2024, Hotel Andaz Delhi, Aerocity, New Delhi, India

SUSTAINABLE FERTILIZER AND AGRICULTURE

¨ From the Chairman’s Desk
Dear Friends,
Fertilizer and agriculture sectors are important for economic development and
food security of any country. Use of fertilizers has played and will continue
to play a key role in enhancing agricultural production. In the recent past,
wide fluctuations in commodity and food grain prices have been seen in the
international market. Further, climate change has emerged as a big challenge
for economies of the world. These factors are severely affecting the livelihood,
food grain production, environment and industry. Sustainable growth in fertilizer
and agriculture assumes paramount importance to meet the growing need of
food for the burgeoning population of the world. This calls for deliberations
in the entire value chains of fertilizers related to production, import, logistics
and use aligning with agricultural production by minimizing adverse effect to
environment, and conservation of natural resources for efficient and sustainable
growth of both the sectors.
Indian fertilizer industry has come a long way to make fertilizers available to the
farmers across the country, supported by a stable policy regime and rapid strides made in fertilizer and weather
monitoring systems. Fertilizer plants are among the best in the world with respect to capacity utilization,
energy efficiency, water conservation, responsible waste management, control of air emissions, community
development, intellectual and human development and others. Government of India has been laying a lot
of emphasis on promoting alternative fertilizers – particularly organic fertilizers, nano fertilizers and fertilizers
with high nutrient use efficiency – with an aim to improve soil organic carbon, usher in balanced fertilisation
and reduce the subsidy burden on the state’s exchequer. Fertilizer companies are working in tandem with
the Government to achieve sustainable growth for the industry and ensure stability in farm produce.
This year’s FAI Seminar, which is 60th in the series with the theme of Sustainable Fertilizer and Agriculture,
will provide an opportunity to take stock of the various areas related to sustainable production, logistics,
marketing and use of fertilizers for supporting agricultural growth. Further, appropriate policy interventions
for sustainability of the sectors will also be there.
The Seminar is scheduled during 4-6 December, 2024 at Hotel Andaz Delhi, Aerocity, New Delhi. As in past,
we hope that all concerned will respond with enthusiasm by sponsoring large number of delegates to make
this unique fertilizer sector event successful.
With Warm regards,

N. Suresh Krishnan

FAI ANNUAL SEMINAR 2024
Sustainable Fertilizer and Agriculture
¨ Sustainable Fertilizer and Agriculture
Over the years, India has seen significant progress in the production of different varieties of crops grown
in India, although year-on-year variations do exist in production of crops in the country. Agriculture has
been witnessing challenges of climate change, deterioration of soil health, depletion of natural and water
resources, fragmentation of land holdings, decline in organic carbon, low nutrient use efficiency due to
imbalance in use of nutrients, etc. However, sustainable growth in agriculture production is necessary
to meet the growing need of food, feed, fibre and fuel for the burgeoning population of the country.
Towards this, adoption of climate-smart agriculture, precision agriculture AI/machine learning solutions
and balanced applications of fertilizers/new products is necessary.

Use of fertilizers is inter-linked to agriculture production as they provide nutrients/food to the plants.
India is heavily dependent on imports for raw materials/ intermediates/ feedstock to produce fertilizers.
As an industry collective, we have to put in sincere efforts to reduce our import dependence. Ensuring
sustainability in existing NH3-urea and complex fertilizer plants will be of prime importance. Feasibility of
use of renewable energy in fertilizer production needs to be explored. Necessity of policy reforms in the
sector is also desirable to align the goals of sustainable development. Understanding of global fertilizer
market/prices and future outlook play an important role in strategic import planning for the country.

The prospects of digital marketing and innovative strategies in the marketing of agri-inputs are to be
understood. India has taken a lead in production and use of nano technology based fertilizers which
supplement nutrient requirement of crops.

It is in this context that this year’s Seminar is devoted to the theme Sustainable Fertilizer and Agriculture.
The experiences of the experts from world/India will be useful for devising strategies for sustainable
growth in fertilizer and agriculture sectors.

• Assist the industry in improving its operational efficiency;

• Find solutions to the problems faced by the fertilizer industry and agriculture;

• Promote balanced and efficient use of fertilizers;

• Encourage use of more and better plant foods and

• Promote consideration and discussion of all issues that contribute to sound agricultural
practices.

FAI is represented on important government committees/panels related to fertilizer and agriculture.

The Association cooperates actively with the Government of India on all issues related to fertilizer
sector and acts as an interface between the Industry and the Government by maintaining close
contacts and rapport.

The Indian fertilizer industry is highly complex and technology driven consisting of plants with
varying capacity, technology, vintage and product range. With nearly 700 members comprising
Active, Associate, Overseas Associate and Technical and Professional, FAI provides the necessary
support for meeting the challenges facing the Industry.
