1. Reading comprehension PB.P.[30-32]

Read the passage, then answer the following questions:

My dad used to live in Switzerland and he worked as a mountain guide.
This summer Dad wanted to visit Switzerland again. In July I travelled to
the mountains with Mum, Dad and my twin brother Fred. We stayed in a hotel
in a little village and we had a great time.
One day Dad took us on his favourite walk. First, we followed a narrow path
through a meadow. There were lots of flowers and there were goats
with bells round their necks. They tinkled when the goats moved.
After that, the path went through a forest. It was shady and quiet. It
reminded me of Red Riding Hood but I didn’t see a wolf! After the forest, the path
climbed steeply towards the mountain peaks. It led between huge rocks and then
the walk became a real adventure. Dad had some surprises for us.

The sound was incredible. A waterfall really does roar. It sounded like an angry
beast. We couldn’t hear each other at all. Dad beckoned to us and we followed him.
The path led behind the waterfall. It was amazing. On the left of the path was the
mountainside and on the right was falling water. I thought it was fantastic but it was
a bit scary, too. It was quite dark and very noisy.

A paragraph is a group of sentences about the same subject.
Every new paragraph begins on a new line.

the first goal. Then Star Rovers scored a goal. Finally, Ricky Rogers scored

another goal and Mega United won the match.

for us.

D. On Saturday, I went to see Mega United play Star Rovers. The match was at

the Mega United Stadium. It’s a new stadium and it’s very big. I went with

my best friend. We were very excited because Mega United is our favourite

team.

5. Class composition; Writing preparation PB.P.[36]

A personal recount → tells us about an event the writer experienced.

The writer:

 Writes about the people they went with.

 Writes about the things and places they saw.
 Uses the first person pronouns (I and we).
 Tells us what happened in order and uses ‘First, Next, Then, After (that),
Finally’. (e.g. First, we followed a narrow path through a meadow.)
 Tells us what they did and what they thought.
 Does not usually use direct speech.
 Uses paragraphs to make it easier to read and understand.
 Begins with a short paragraph to tell us where they were, why they were
there, and who was with them.

Exercise:

Look at page 36 (PB). Read the speech bubbles and the sentences. Look at the
pictures and the captions. Suggest words to help describe each one. Think of
adjectives, adverbs and more obvious nouns to make the story more
interesting. Give details.

Let’s write Fred’s recount of the day.

One day we went to a very big lake. We went by train. The train was small, but
the windows were big. We could see mountains all round.

10
First, we arrived at the lake. It was enormous. There were lots of boats on it.
There was a small beach at the side of the lake. We swam in the water. It was
freezing! Then, we had our lunch. I had a big fish. It came from the lake.

After lunch, we went on a boat. We went across the lake to a small village. It
was very pretty. All the houses had steep roofs and it was green everywhere. We
sat in a café. Dad bought ice cream for everyone. I had chocolate and lemon. It
was delicious.

Finally, we caught a train to our village. The train was crowded because lots of
people were going home after work.
