THE EIGHTIES
In the eighties there were good times and important events such as the fall of the
Berlin Wall (1989), and the end of the Cold War. There were some bad times, for
instance, food crisis in Ethiopia, the war in the Middle East, and the world’s
terrorism started when Osama bin Laden formed Al Qaeda in 1985.
The memorable films of the decade were Star Wars, Jaws, and Indiana Jones.
In the world of music, MTV launched in 1981, and Live Aid concert took place in
1985 to raise money to help the people in Ethiopia. Rock, heavy metal and punk
bands like Iron Maiden (UK), Guns N’Roses (USA), were very popular. Pop
music, for example, ABBA (Sweden), Michael Jackson (USA), were popular, too.
The first music CD was produced in Germany in 1982.
By the end of the decade, CDs, video games, and camcorders become popular.
Many people had CD players and game consoles at home.

Unicycle hockey is very similar to ice hockey, but all players have to ride
unicycles with both feet on the pedals. Unicycle hockey has been played since the
1920s. There are two teams of five players each. The players use sticks and a ball
and there are two goals. Players who fall off their unicycles can get on again in
exactly the same place. The court has no corners and it has safety barriers on all
sides. Unicycle hockey has fans in the UK and Germany, and its popularity is
growing.

I have recently watched a film called Yellow Flowers on the Green Grass. It is
based on Nguyen Nhat Anh’s best-seller in the same title.
The main characters are the two brothers: Thieu, a 12-year-old boy, and his little
brother, Tuong, a 7-year-old boy. The plot is about the memories of the poor
childhood. The brothers do everything together: playing in rice paddles, playing
games,… Their days are filled with curious adventures. Then one day, Man,
Thieu’s classmate comes to stay at their house for a while because her house is on
fire. Because of jealousy, Thieu does physical harm to Tuong, so Tuong can’t
stand up. In order to meet his classmate, Nhi, Tuong tries to walk again, and one
day he runs to find Nhi.
I particularly enjoy the characters and the theme of friendship. Many of the
scenes are memorable because they are filmed in the beautiful countryside of Phu
Yen Province.
All in all, I really enjoyed the film. I’d like to recommend this film to everyone
because I think all of us want to recall our childhood.
