APPLICATION OF A DC MOTOR IN HOMES

DEPARTMENT OF IT

1.INTRODUCTION:

In the present day world, electrical energy is generated in bulk in the form of
an alternating current. Hence, the use of DC machines, i.e., DC generators and motors are
very limited. They are mainly used in supplying excitation of small and medium – range
alternators. The industrial applications of DC Machines are in Electrolytic process, Welding
process and Variable speed motor drives.

2.PARTS OF A DC MOTOR:

Every DC motor has six basic parts which are axle, rotor (a.k.a.,
armature), stator, commutator, field magnet(s), and brushes. In most common DC motors
(and all that beamers will see), the external magnetic field is produced by high strength
permanent magnets. The stator is the stationary part of the motor – this includes the motor
casing, as well as two or more permanent magnet pole pieces. The rotor (together with the
axle and attached commutator) rotate with respect to the stator. The rotor consists of
windings (generally on a core), the windings being electrically connected to the commutator.
The above diagram shows a common motor layout with the rotor inside the stator (field)
magnets.

2.1. TYPES OF DC MOTORS:

2.1.1. SERIES MOTOR:

SERIES MOTOR

The series DC motors are used where high stating torque is required
and variations in speed are possible. For example – the series motors are used in traction
system, sewing machine etc.

2.1.2. SHUNT MOTORS:

The shunt motors are used where constant speed is required

and starting conditions are not severe. The various applications of DC shunt
motors are in Lathe Machines, Spinning Machines etc.

2.1.3. compound motors:

Compound DC motor

The compound motors are used where higher starting torque and fairly
constant speed is required. The examples of usage of compound motors are in Presses,
Elevators etc.

3. APPLICATIONS:

Most of the dc motors used in homed dc series motors. The series motor is
suitable for both high and low power drives, for fixed and variable speed electric drives.
Because of its high starting torque, this motor uses in the cheap toys with which the children
used to play. And they are also used in automotive applications such as Cranes which is used
in construction works but when we come to about the application of DC motors in homes,
they are used in Air compressor, lifts which is also used in apartments and some of the
individual houses.
They are used in Hair drier which we use regularly after bath to dry our hair
and in Vacuum cleaners with which the cleaning of dusts in home becomes easy. The
permanent magnet DC motor is the special motor where we use permanent magnet to create
the required magnetic field. It uses in automobiles such as a starter motor, personal computer
disc drives, toys, wheelchairs, blowers in heater and in air conditioner.

4.CONCLUSION:

A DC motor (direct current motor) has a lot of applications in the field of

engineering and technology. From electric shavers to automobiles – DC motors are
everywhere. To cater this wide range of applications -- different types of DC motors are used
depending on the application.
