CHAPTER 1:
THE PROBLEM AND IT’S SCOPE

Behavior and personal traits are one of the characteristics that falls at the category of

self-concept. Various studies seek to answer how social media consumption can be a factor

and be an influence towards the individual’s behavior. According to Arora, N. Et. al (2023),

exploring the influence of social media as a factor in terms of psychological aspect. This

involves the individual’s characteristics such as focus, sleep time and psychological health

also shows symptoms of suddenly dancing without any music at all because of social media

influence such as tiktok, facebook, youtube, twiter, and instagram.

Furthermore, one study of China revealed that people's use of social media was

correlated with their amount of time spent online. This indicates that spending more time

online can have an impact on individual's overall development, including their physical,

cognitive, and psychological aspects, all of which have a significant impact on their behavior

(Barbosa et al. 2021).

Social media can create a negative impact to their behavior by depriving the students

towards the important social cues in which they supposed to be learned through in-person

communication. This can affect the social communicating skills of an individuals that indulge

too much in their smartphones. Furthermore, excessive social media consumption can

increase the feeling of inadequacy, dissatisfaction and self-isolation. In the study of

Christopher and Charles (2017), too much social media consumption develop a symptoms of

suicidality, loneliness and decreased empathy. Other studies have not found evidence for

harm, or have indicated that social media is be beneficial for some individuals. In the

national context, a current correlational study was initiated in University of The Philippines

with 356 college students was examined for their time spent using social media. Majority of

the respondents highlights social media as one of their important tools in their lives which

resulted in changing their behaviors such as being emotional, aggression and lack of social
skills. The study aims to emphasize the phenomenon by acknowledging the factors that

causes behavioral change to individuals.

In study conducted in Davao City, to determine how social media consumption

influences the overall behavioral aspect of the student or an individual. According to the

study of Jan, M. Et. al (2017). Social networking platforms have led to upward comparisons,

which have lowered people's self-esteem. This statement emphasizes that social media

gains one of the factors why a student or individual spends it too much rather than develop

their communication skills that are necessary on socializing. Moreover, the study indicates

significant relationship between the social media and self-esteem. In conclusion, social

media usage has a possibility to create a negative issue upon the behavioral aspect of an

individual and recognized some factors that might be able to develop this current

phenomenon.

Numerous researchers have studied the prevalence, reasons behind it, management

issues, and potential solutions to social media consumption. Henceforth, some of the

existing literature has specifically provided evidence of the causes and contributing factors to

behavioral changes, but only few studies have discussed the connection between the levels

and relationship of the variables among Senior High School students. This research solely

wants to explore an in-depth analysis between the relationship Social Media Use and

Personality traits, specifically to the General Academic Strand students in the A. L. Navarro

National High School

Purpose of the Study

This study aims to determine the significant relationship between personal traits and

social media use of General Academic Strand (GAS) students in A.L. Navarro National High

School. This study also aims to measure the level of Personal traits and social media use.

Moreover, this study will highlight the research findings wherein it expounds the respective

implications and how they potentially connected to the behavioral issues of an individual.

Statement of the Problem

1. What is the level of personality traits among the Grade 11 GAS students of Alejandra

L. Navarro National High School in terms of;

1.1 Self-Esteem

1.2 Anxiety

1.3 Flow

1.4 Self-rated importance

2. What is the level of social media use………….. in terms of;

2.1 Time

2.2 Emotional Stability

2.3 Emotional Control

2.4 Loneliness

3. Is there a significant relationship between personality traits and social media use of

GAS Senior High School Students of A. L. Navarro National High School?

Hypothesis

The hypothesis will be tested at a 0.05 level of significance:

H0: There is no significant relationship between personal traits and social media use among

Senior High school students in A.L. Navarro National High School.

Ha: There is a significant relationship between Social Media Use and Personality Traits

among the grade 11 GAS students Senior high school students in Alegandra L. Navarro

National High School.

Importance of the Study

This study highlights the important individuals and institution that has pivotal role to

the completion of this research.

The school administration will be benefit from this study because it can provide

valuable insights into student behavior, well-being, and academic performance. This

information can be used to improve communication, promote responsible social media use,

and enhance educational practices.

Secondly, the teachers can also become a beneficial pursuit to the study. The

findings can provide them to enhance their teaching practices and improve student

engagement in the classroom setting.

Thirdly, the students of A. L. Navarro National High School, the main proponent of

this study, can also brought an importance to their behavioral lifestyle through the access of

this research. The interpretation of data enables them to actualize their vision in the mode of

reality, to utilize the social media application in a healthy and proper management that

significantly strike their balance between online users and sustainable user consumption.
Delimitation and Limitation of this study

This study has a sample group of 114 General Academic Strand (GAS) of Senior

High School Students in A. L. Navarro National High School. The respondents must have a

background involvement in terms to their experience of personality traits and social media

usage. However, other tracks and programs from Senior High School and Junior High

School of the said public institution are excluded in the study.

Definition of Terms

 Personality Trait

This refers to a trait or quality that characterizes an individual's typical

thoughts, feelings, and behaviour.

 Social Media Use

This refers to the use of websites or applications by people to interact,

exchange information, and connect with others online.

 Students

This refers those who are learning material or studying a subject, typically in a

classroom or other educational setting.

Theoretical Framework

According to Whole Traits theory, as an integrative model of traits that includes

mechanisms of varied reaction to conditions, Traits are divided into an explanatory and a

descriptive half when an explanation of the Big 5 (Openess to experience,

Conscientinousness, Extravention, Agreeableness, Neuroticism) is given. Whole Traits

Theory suggests that social-cognitive factors make up the trait explanatory side. Although

they are connected to form entire qualities, these two component elements of traits should

be acknowledged as separate things. An overview of Whole Traits theory is given in this

review, along with new perspectives on Whole Traits theory role in personality development,
potential applications of Whole traits theory to traits other than the Big Five, and potential

avenues for intervention.

Review of Related Literature

This chapter presents the review related literature and studies to futher understand

the study. Concepts, ideas, and findings of different studies are discussed to understand the

variables use in the research.

Personality characteristics offer explanations for behavior from a distance and align

with personality growth, valuable in therapy settings, and inherently captivating. However,

they need to be interpreted within a larger framework of personality operation

(Costa,P.&MacCrae, R.,2012).

Structure-oriented research conducted in the Philippines utilizing the Revised NEO

Personality Inventory (NEO-PI-R) suggests that the Five-Factor Model is applicable to the

Philippine setting, especially when specific factor rotations are employed (Church, T.

&Katigbak, M., n.d.).

The personality trait is a dynamic and organized collection of attributes possessed by

a person that distinctly affects their environment, thoughts, feelings, and actions in various

situations (Mar, Q. E. et al., 2017).

Online social networks have gained popularity as a platform for sharing information

and linking individuals with similar interests. The open accessibility of these networks that

allow the sharing of opinions, insights, information, and experiences presents significant

opportunities for businesses and governments. Besides individuals utilizing these networks

to link with their friends and relatives, governments and businesses have begun to leverage

these platforms for providing their services to citizens and clients (Sherchan, W. et al.,

2013).
Social media platforms, as new political arenas, have enabled a new understanding

of political involvement, particularly among younger individuals. Their interactive nature,

especially through blogging, social networking, and content sharing, has motivated more

individuals to engage in political matters and has helped shift the method of protest from

physical streets to online platforms (Lim, N., 2009).

Chapter 2

Method

This chapter will present the methods and procedures that the research will use in

conducting this study. Moreover, this section includes the research design, research locale

the section criteria for research respondents, the instruments that will be used in this study,

the procedures in gathering the data and the procedures in behavior the data that the

research will apply in this study.

Research Design
In this study, the researcher will be using a correlational research research design to

discuss the relationship between personality traits and social media use of Grade 11

General Academic Strand (GAS) students in A.L. Navarro national High School. According

to Lemboye (2019), supported the concept of correlational research design by stating that a

correlational study goal is to improve the current understanding of the relationship between

personality traits and social media use of Grade 11 GAS students in A.L. Navarro National

High School.

Research Locale

This study will be conducted at Alejandra Navarro National High School, established

on January 1, 1996, by Alejandra Lauan Navarro, the original landowner who subsequently

donated the property to the government. Located in Purok Sagittarius, Lasang, Davao City,

Philippines, the institution serves approximately. The campus was provided by the Navarro

family, and it is affiliated with A.L. Navarro Central Elementary School, recognized as one of

the top-rated educational institutions in Lasang. The General Academic Strand (GAS) at A.L.

Navarro National High School is tailored for students who are uncertain about their future

paths. This track provides ample opportunities for students to explore different courses and

make informed decisions about their academic journeys. Many students who are undecided

about which strand to pursue often choose GAS as a flexible option. According to Biliran

(2018) GAS is frequently regarded as the preferred choice for those wishing to keep their

college options open. It offers a diverse curriculum that allows students to sample various

subjects while also featuring specialized courses such as Disaster Readiness and Risk

Reduction, preparing them for real-world challenges.

Research Respondents

The participants in this research are the 114 students in Grade 11 GAS. The

researchers plan to choose 89 individuals as a representative sample from the population.

The size of the sample was calculated using the Raosoft sample calculator. The primary

function of the Raosoft is to calculate or generate the sample size for research or surveys.

The researcher will use a simple random sampling as a sampling

technique.According to Noor, S. et.al (2022).Simple random sampling is a widely utilized

sampling method in quantitative studies with survey instruments. It is asserted that simple

random sampling is favorable in homogeneous and uniformly selected populations. The

simple random sampling will be used in selecting the participants. By selecting the

respondents, the researcher

Research Instrument

This study will adopt a survey questionnaire to determine the relationship between

the personal traits and social media use in the premises of grade-12 Gas students. In this

study the instrument that will be used is a Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) with a scale of

8-point questionnaire and Social Media Use Scale (SMUS) with a 5-point scale to measure

the social media usage time and whether what purpose they spend that time with. Both of

the instruments that will be used to collect data and provide an informative assessment

possible. The Myers-Briggs Type Indicator by Katharine Cook Briggs and Isabel Briggs

Myers was created to measure the different personalities and how is it relevant to their

social media use and social media activities while Social Media Use Scale will be used to

measure their social media activities and to find out why is it relevant to their personality

traits. The reliability of the instruments will be defined to their Cronbach’s Alpha coefficient

of 0.84 and 0.71. In order to to complete this questionnaire the respondents will be
answering different sets of questions according to their respective personality

characteristics. Furthermore, Social Media Use Scale (SMUS) each items scored on a 5-

point likert scale, ranging from 1 (sometimes) and 5 (very often) based on the selection of

their purpose on using social media.

Data Gathering Procedure

The researchers will consider the following technical procedures: Since the research

will be conducted on student’s personal traits and social media use among the students in

A.L NAVARRO NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL, the researchers will use varieties of methods in

order to gather appropriate data that will be used when conducting a study. Due to the fact

that the survey the researchers will employ is face- to-face, the researchers will inform the

administration since the research concerns the students. First, the researchers will send a

letter to the office of the principal to conduct a personal survey. Second, the researchers will

send a letter to the Senior High School Focal Person. The researchers will seek validation of

their questionnaire before they will administer the questionnaire. Once approved, the

researchers will immediately start to conduct the study with the survey and data gathering.

Third, the respondents will be asked for their permission to participate in the research

through a survey questionnaire. Once the respondents have agreed, the researchers will

explain to the respondents the importance of their response to the study. The researchers

will also clarify some terms to the respondents so that the respondents can answer the

question with full knowledge of their responsibility as the subject of the study. After that, the

researchers will provide a survey questionnaire to the respondents, which they must answer

honestly. Fourth, the respondents provide their perspectives on the level of academic stress

and suicidal ideation they are experiencing in their everyday lives. To serve their intended
respondents, the researchers invested a lot of time, effort, and cooperation in producing their

questionnaire. The survey’s appropriate questions were adjusted based on pertinent

research.

Data Analysis

The researchers will employ Pearson's r, or product moment correlation, and mean

(or average) as statistical tools to properly evaluate the data. The researchers will sum up all

of the data set's numbers and divide that total by the number of values in the set to

determine the sample mean, or average. A.L. Grade 11 GAS students' Sleep deprivation

and academic performance were found to be significantly correlated using the Pearson-r, or

Product Moment Correlation, test Alejandra L. Navarro National High School. Additionally,

this approach will let the researchers measure the data they have collected between

student’s personality traits and social media use among the Grade 11 GAS students in A.L

NAVARRO.
