Why Art is Needed in Writing to Further Express Yourself

Often times writers use different ways to incorporate arts and different techniques to
enhance their writing. This course will help future writers like ourselves be a voice in
today’s society. Learning about the different ways art is expressed through writing will
allow writers to challenge themselves by using this technique to engage readers. It is
important for writers to convey a clear message to the readers, in doing so the reader will
be able to connect with the writer on a deeper level. According to The Necessity of Art,
“The work of art must grip the audience not through passive identification but through an
appeal to reason which demands action and decision” (p.10). The use of art in writing
captivates the reader to dive deeper into the text. This part of the course will allow us to
formulate a better style in writing to grasp attention.
Writers must write with tense emotions so the reader can be able to feel what is
being portrayed through the characters. Emotion and passion is the key to a good piece of
literature. Readers want to be able to see right through the character and their emotions.
“Emotion for an artist is not everything; he must also know his trade and enjoy it,
understand all the rules, skills, forms, and conventions whereby nature-the shrew-can be
tamed and subjected to the contract of art” (p.9). In order for emotions to be displayed the
writer has to at least enjoy what they are writing. This will allow us students to learn how
to choose topics we enjoy when writing and to progressively express their voice and
opinions.
Art in literature can be used in many different ways. For instance grammar and
vocabulary, the way a writer uses intricate words to detail the significance of their piece
will catch many eyes. “The huge repertoire of gestures established, as it were, the rhythm
and the limits which confined the spoken words, and the great wealth of definitions

which lay in the actual vocabulary replaced the art of grammar” (p.25). In today’s literary
world, grammar and vocabulary is a huge part of publishing a piece. Practicing and
learning this skill throughout the course will familiarize the students with the language in
their writing.

Why Art is Needed in Writing to Further Express Yourself

In literature, two popular genres are fiction and nonfiction. Fiction is art that
develops imagination into literature. However, nonfiction is based purely off of facts.
“Art enables man to comprehend reality, and not only helps him to bear it but increases
his determination to make it more human and more worthy of mankind” (p.46). Art will
be able to help and teach students how to differentiate between writing fiction and
nonfiction. Using this technique will allow readers to see the shift in reality in the
author’s writing.
Art is an expression of the human experience. “Art is the indispensable means for
this merging of the individual with the whole. It reflects his infinite capacity for
association, for sharing experiences and ideas” (p.8-9). This concept will teach us the
connection between art and emotion throughout this course. Using this technique will aid
writers in channeling their use of self-expression in their writing to help the readers not
only build a relationship with the characters in the story, but the author as well. Students
will also be able to learn how important art was in developing society as well as how
much of a major role it plays in today’s society.
Along with vocabulary and grammar, rhythm is another type of art used in
literature. “Thus there was power stored up in every linguistic means of expression-
power over both man and nature” (p.31). Rhythm accentuates a piece of literary work.
Writers don't often use rhythm in their pieces. Using this type of art within the course will
teach students how the elevate their pieces with technique that rolls right off the tongue.
Not only does this make a piece of writing more interesting but it also brings it more to
life.
