READING
7 Read the text. Decide if the sentences are true (T) or false (F).
Martin: I don’t like it when someone points a finger at me while they are talking, but my dad always does that
when he’s talking to me. He thinks that he’s stressing the importance of what he’s saying, but I just stop
listening. My mum shrugs her shoulders when he does this and looks me in the eye and smiles. It’s something
my dad can’t change so it’s become a bit of a family joke.
I get on really well with both my parents, but not with my two sisters, who seem to spend most of their time
instant messaging their friends and not speaking at all. They see each other all day at school and they are
texting or messaging all evening if they aren’t together. Dad gets very annoyed with my sisters because they
make funny facial expressions when he starts shouting at them for not doing their homework.
Dad and I go fishing every Sunday afternoon, and although we don’t speak much, I feel we communicate in
other ways. I think the best way for me to communicate with others is through my music. I write songs and play
the guitar and I love playing for my friends. They’re always surprised that someone like me who is usually so
quiet, has got such a lot to say in music.
Melanie: My brother, Martin, doesn’t really chat to his friends very much, but he’s a very good singer. My sister
Beth and me are always talking to our friends or texting them. Sometimes we drive Dad mad because we are
always looking at our phones, and he raises his voice and points his finger and then we both look at each other
and laugh.
Beth and I use a lot of hand gestures when we talk, but we don’t do what Dad does. We move our arms around
as if we are trying to draw a picture of what we are saying. Martin finds this funny and starts copying us. I guess
it’s a family thing, using our hands. Beth is the chattier of us two sisters and sometimes we talk at the same time
and no one can understand us.
