Good day dear students! Although we are currently experiencing a pandemic and
dealing with the “new normal”, do not forget to study your lessons and to appreciate the
beauty and importance of art in your daily lives. That is why this Self-learning Kit is created
and produced for your self-paced learning at home until we are ready for the face-to-face
learning at school.

Read and understand this SLK. Answer all the given activities and assessments
in order to measure your understanding in your lesson. After you completed all your
activities, submit this SLK to your subject teacher for checking. Remember to read the
instruction before doing each activity and assessment as part of the SLK. Use your
notebook in answering your activities and assessments. Please DO NOT WRITE
anything on this SLK.

Good luck! Happy learning!

• Creates artworks that can be locally assembled with local

materials, guided by 21st century techniques. (A10PR-IIc-
e-1)
At the end of the lesson, you are expected to:
1. Define digital photography as one of the characteristics of
artworks in the 21st century.
2. Show creativity and resourcefulness by making artworks
out of local materials.
3. Create an artwork using a pinhole camera.

2
This activity will help you assess your previous
knowledge and understanding regarding the topic you will learn
in this SLK. Read the instruction and enjoy the lesson. You are
given 5 minutes to do the activity.

ACTIVITY 1: True or False

Directions: Read the statements below. Identify whether the statement is True
or False. Write the answer in your notebook.
_____ 1. Digital Photography is a technology-based art that evolved from the earlier
type of photography that made use of the action of light-sensitive film as manipulated
by a user of a camera.
_____ 2. The acronym DSLR stands for digital single lens reflex camera.
_____ 3. Point-and-shoot type of camera does not automatically make all the
adjustments in lighting, focus, and zoom-in and zoom-out.
_____ 4. DSLR camera does not give the photographer much more artistic freedom
and control to select the camera settings to create the desired final image with the
preferred visual effects.
_____ 5. A simple and not too cluttered background makes you capture a good quality
image.

3
In the previous lesson, you have learned how to create
computer-generated images using different manipulation
programs and applications to modify.

In this lesson, you will learn another characteristic of artwork

in the 21st century which is digital photography and its two types-
“point-and-shoot” and Digital single lens reflex (DSLR) camera.

In learning the topic, you will be able to learn how to use

digital camera, how to take good photographs, and make a pin-
hole camera out of local materials.

Another means of generating an original image is to capture it first as a digital

file. In the case of today’s electronic technology, that would mean recording the image
using a digital camera or a device with a built-in camera, like your mobile phone,
android device, or tablet.

Prior to the development of digital photography, cameras were essentially

sealed boxes that would allow a split-second entry of light to strike a section of light-
sensitive film inside it. The result was that whatever was in front of the camera at the
precise instant that the light entered it would be imprinted on that exposed section of
film as a photographic image. The photographer (or a commercial developing service)
would then have to process the exposed film in a special enclosed space known as a
“dark room”- and only then would the recorded images be seen.

Today’s users have the option of a “point-and-shoot” type of digital camera

which automatically makes all the adjustments in lighting, focus, zoom-in, and zoom-
out, even removal of “red eye” with the user being given some leeway for slight
adjustments. It offers image enhancement features like adjusting color and brightness
imbalances, as well as sharpening or blurring the image. It allows the user to
immediately review the photos taken without waiting for a complex developing
process- and to delete any unsatisfactory images while storing the good ones for future
needs.
Digital single lens reflex (DSLR) camera provides the film-less and instant
review features of a “point-and-shoot” type of digital camera, but gives the
photographer much more artistic freedom and control to select the camera settings to
create the desired final image with the preferred visual effects.

Whether you are using a point-and-shoot camera or a DSLR, there are basic
guidelines for capturing good quality photographic image:

4
1. Choose a good location.
2. Choose a simple but not too cluttered background, so that the focus will be on your
chosen subject.
3. Natural light is usually the most flattering or effective for any kind of subject.
4. Avoid taking shots facing the light.
5. If you intend to take a posed shot, position your subject where you want in relation
to the location, background, and source of light.
6. If you intend to take a candid shot, position yourself where you can capture the most
interesting, amusing, touching, or engaging moment or expression.
7. Take a variety of shots and choose from among all these for the best photo or
photos.

Here are some examples:

5
Now that you are done reading and understanding the lesson,
here are some activities for you to further check your learning.
Please do the activities as honestly as you can.

ACTIVITY 1: Identifying terms

DIRECTIONS: Read the statements below. Identify what is described or
defined in each statement. Write your answer in your notebook.
___________ 1. It offers image enhancement features like adjusting color and
brightness imbalances, as well as sharpening or blurring the image.
___________ 2. It provides the film-less and instant review features of a “point-and-
shoot” type of digital camera.
___________ 3. It allows the user to immediately review the photos taken without
waiting for a complex developing process- and to delete any unsatisfactory images
while storing the good ones for future needs.
___________ 4. It automatically makes all the adjustments in lighting, focus, zoom-in,
and zoom-out, even removal of “red eye” with the user being given some leeway for
slight adjustments.
___________ 5. It gives the photographer much more artistic freedom and control to
select the camera settings to create the desired final image with the preferred visual
effects.

ACTIVITY 2: Word Search

Directions: Search terms that were discussed in your lesson. Copy the table in
your notebook and encircle the words you can find.

ACTIVITY 3: Creating Pinhole Camera
Materials:

• Shoebox or similar lidded box

• Black paint (if box is colored or printed)
• Small piece of sheet metal (approximately 3”x3”)
• Large needle
• X-acto knife
• Sandpaper
• Light-sensitive photo paper
• Tape
• scissors
Procedure
▪ Ask help from your parents or any adult at home, or watch How To Make A
Pinhole Camera videos on YouTube.
(Reference: http://www.instructables.com/id/How-To-Make-A-Pinhole-Camera/)
▪ Use the needle to punch a tiny hole in the piece of sheet metal. Smoothen the
edges of the hole with sandpaper.
▪ Cut a small square opening in one side of the box, using the X-acto knife.
▪ Tape the piece of sheet metal over this opening on the inside of the box.
Completely seal all edges of the sheet metal with tape.
▪ On the outer side of the opening, make a “flap” out of scrap cardboard to cover
the pinhole in the sheet metal. Secure it in place with more tape.
▪ Bring the box, its lid, the light sensitive photo paper, and the tape into a totally
dark closet or small room.
▪ Carefully unwrap the light-sensitive photo paper. Tape the paper on the inner
side of the box opposite the pinhole.
▪ Put the lid on the box and seal its edges securely with tape on all sides to ensure
that no light can seep in.
▪ Once the pinhole cameras are ready, you will go outdoors and look for a subject
for your photos.
Note: Be sure to choose a totally still or static subject.
▪ Follow the procedure below for taking a photograph with your camera:
o Position the camera on a stable surface, with the covered pinhole facing
in the direction of your chosen subject.
o Without moving or shaking the box, carefully loosen the tape holding the
cardboard flap over the pinhole.
o Tape the flap in the “open” position for approximately 15 minutes, and
leave the box totally still for the entire duration.
o When the time is up, carefully close the flap and tape it shut once more.
▪ Keeping your pinhole camera fully sealed, bring them to a shop in your area
where the exposed paper will be developed into photographs, or you can do it
yourself.

Digital Photography is a technology-based art that evolved from the
earlier type of photography that made use of the action of light-
sensitive film as manipulated by a user of a camera. In contrast,
digital photography makes use of devices that automatically set
and adjust the needed elements (shutter opening, shutter speed,
flash lighting, zoom in/out, etc.) to ensure a good quality image. It
then stores these images on a storage device built into the camera
for future retrieval and modification, if desired.
The two basic types of digital photography are point-and-
shoot and DSLR. Point-and-shoot means that the camera pre-sets
the needed elements so that the user can literally just click away.
The DSLR type enables the photographer to still make his/her own
judgments on how to set the device’s features to achieve the
desired image results.

Answer briefly the following questions in your notebook.

1. Did you find it easy or difficult to create a pinhole camera?
2. How were you able to do it? What skills did you apply?
3. If you have experienced both regular digital photography
and DSLR photography, which one did you find more useful
to you? More doable? More interesting?
