I chose to speak about Lithium in this assignment. Lithium is used in many industries
however the most important use for Lithium is rechargeable batteries. Lithium is the
mainstream metal used to make rechargeable batteries as it has low self-discharge rates and

each cell is capable of outputting more voltage than other types of metals. These properties
allow lithium batteries to perform better and be smaller in size compared to other types of
rechargeable batteries.
Lithium belongs to group one and period two on the periodic table which means it is an alkali
metal therefore it is highly reactive with other elements. As mentioned earlier, the properties
of lithium (Low self-discharge rate and more voltage output per cell) allow it to be used in
batteries. These properties make the batteries smaller in size than other types. The scientific
explanation is that Lithium has one electron on the outer shell which makes it a very good
Everybody benefits from rechargeable batteries as they are used in every portable
One positive environmental impact is that lithium batteries are rechargeable therefore they
can be used many times which reduces the amount of waste, however, extraction of lithium
takes an enormous amount of resources to dig out and soil can be contaminated, and the
environment can be polluted because of all the heavy machinery used in the process.
Those who live closest to lithium mines will mostly be affected as the area near them will be
affected and also become toxic. Water sources will also be contaminated which means
