Why Sports Writing?
Sports writing is considered as the most
popular form of journalistic writing. It is
where we can play with words and we
do not define words literally, but how a
certain sports lingo is used in a
particular sports game.

What consist the headline?
Is there a limit to the
number of word
in the headline?
No, a sports writer is free whether the
headline is one line or two lines as long as the
basic elements of the headline is there. We are
getting rid of the old and the conventional
style. Everything changes and improves, and so
does our style.
Different styles of headline for gamer:

With Kicker - It is place at the

upper left hand corner of the
article. In sports, it is usually the
event or the tournament being
competed.

This is usually a two-word headline that
sums up the article, but a deck is needed
to better establish the purpose. Coming
up with a hammer head requires deep
analysis of the game or match.

Remember:

Hammer head is not always applicable in any

sports event. It is only done to highlight a very
significant achievement of a player or a team. If
the game is not that significant, don't risk. Prefer
the headline which you are more comfortable
and you are more confident of winning.
Usual gamer headline
It is the safest and most common
headline many sports writers use. This is
use in consideration of your target
reader. That is why, it is commonly use by
many tabloids and school papers.

Reminder:

In sports writing competition, (the

writers') target reader is not the
students or ordinary readers, that is
why they have to use a convincing,
substantial and competitive headline.
Make sure that your headline and
lead can easily get the attention of
your target reader. The same thing is
applied in doing the articles for the
school paper.
The LEAD really matters
The sports story lead is critical to the
story.
Use the most dramatic, yet most
specific verb that best describes the
quality of action.
The Lead is the KEY to any story.
The classic 5 W's and 1 H
appear in the sports' lead as:
1. WHO won the game?
2. HOW did they win?
3. Against WHOM?
4. By WHAT score?
5. WHERE? and
6. WHEN?
Example:

The Key Player lead
The focus of the lead is with the player
(hero of the game) who played the key
role for the team’s victory. It is always
applicable with team events but not
with individual event.
Example:
The Toronto Raptors rose from 16 points down in the third
canto to eliminate the Milwaukee Bucks, 100-94, as Kawhi
Leonard again came out stellar with a near-tripple double
unloading 27 points, 17 rebounds and 7 assists and the
Raptors dispatched Giannis Antetokounmpo and the top-

Saturday.
Key Play / Execution lead

Delayed lead
It is a little similar with
background lead- which focus on the
game's background. But, delayed
focuses both on the background and
the game result.
Example:

prevail.
Fernando Airbase Integrated National High School almost
scrambled after squandering its twice-to-beat advantage against
the gritty Bolbok Integrated National High School, but managed to
close out the match, 1-2; 2-1 to salvage the championship crown
and clinched its historic three-peat at the 2018 Public Secondary
Schools Athletic Meet (PSSAM) at Pinagtungulan Integrated
National High School, Sept. 18.
Sports lingo
The use of appropriate sports
lingo can add spice to the
development of your article
in sports writing.
In Sports writing, we can use wide array of sports lingo.

De La Salle Lipa Chevron nullified Canossa Canines late game

half outburst as John Mark Maglinao scored back-to-back goal in a
span of ten minutes and Junell Baculi’s goal in the 77th minute tied
the game at 3-apiece to put a scare to the defending champions.
But the graduating Chevron booter, lucky enough, just got
the right position in the right time for a perfect header that totally
shutdown Canines slim chances.
“I was very lucking getting the best position, and I had a
perfect jump for that header. My teammates really showed heart in
this match they were not intimidated of Canossa’s superb energy in
the second half,” said Mangundayao in an interview with the
Catalyst.
 La Salle started off strong with Mangundayao opening up the
scoring spree for the Chevron with his goal in the 13th minute of the game
before Dennis De los Santos and Paul Hernandez scored a goal each in the
19th and 32nd minute to easily build a 3-0 cushion going to the second half.
But Maglinao-led rally in the second half and Baculi’s goal brought
the game back to square one, until Mangundayao made a punctuation goal
to end the match.
“We were almost there, we just came out short with our decisive
run, but it was a really great game. No reasons, no one to blame they are
the better team today,” emphasized Maglinao in a separate interview.
With De La Salle win, they will represent the private school in the
upcoming Stallions League.

Nagtala ng 56 rebounds ang Cagers kontra sa 43 ng Quintet,
habang may 27 turnovers ang huli kumpara sa 15 lamang ng una,
may 52% field goal din ang Bolbok kumpara sa 44% ng Bulacnin.
