Reactions in Our World

Instructions: Complete each section of this report and answer all questions in complete
sentences for full credit.

Review Questions
1. Write a statement to explain the basic differences between a chemical reaction and a
nuclear reaction. Chemical reactions involve the rearrangement of atoms the new
chemical bonds are formed and making changes to the nucleus are causing nuclear
reactions so as the fission of atoms and the fusion of one or more atoms

2. How might the physical characteristics of a reaction help determine the type of reaction
happening? Physical description of a reaction can determine if it is a physical change or a
chemical change example if you can notice heat or light it can be a chemical change
Part One
As you follow along with each demonstration, pay attention to changes that are happening. The
unbalanced reaction is in your data table. This will help you follow along with each reactant. Pay
attention to the state of each reactant: solid (s), liquid (l), gas (g), or aqueous solution (aq).

Complete the table by including the following:

 A balanced chemical reaction
 The physical and chemical properties and changes you observe during the reaction
 The reaction type (single replacement, double replacement, synthesis, decomposition,
redox, or combustion)

The first one is done for you as a model. Notice you can have more than one reaction type.
Chemical Reaction Observations Reaction Type
Iron and copper (II) sulfate The gray solid Single
Fe + CuSO4(aq) → Fe2(SO4)3(aq) + Cu(s) changes from gray Replacement,
to a gold color. Redox
Balanced Reaction?
2Fe + 3CuSO4(aq) → Fe2(SO4)3(aq) + 3Cu(s)
Lead (II) nitrate and potassium iodide The clear liquid Double
Pb(NO3)2(aq) + KI(aq) → KNO3(aq) + PbI2(s) dose not mix in replacement
the yellow liquid reaction
Balanced Reaction? and yellow stays
Pb(NO3)2(aq) +2 KI(aq) → 2KNO3(aq) + PbI2(s) at the bottom of
the test tube
Magnesium metal and hydrochloric acid Bubbles started to Single
Mg(s) + HCl(aq) → MgCl2(aq) + H2(g) appear around replacement
magnesium

Balanced Reaction?
Mg(s) + 2HCl(aq) → MgCl2(aq) + H2(g)
Electrolysis of water It foarmed small Decomposition
H2O(l) → H2(g) + O2(g) bubbles around
H2 and the H2
Balanced Reaction? started to come
2H2O(l) → 2H2(g) + O2(g) apart into the
water
Burning magnesium Orange & white Redox,
Mg(s) + O2(g) → MgO(s) flames caused by combustion
magnesium
Balanced Reaction?
2Mg(s) + O2(g) → 2MgO(s)

Part Two
Four nuclear reactions are given and the observation from the reaction. Determine the type of
nuclear reaction (fission or fusion). While there is no visual lab to accompany this, all equations
are listed for you.
Nuclear Reaction Observations Reaction Type
1 235 89 144 1
0 n + 92U → 36Kr + 56Ba +3 0n Huge explosion fission
2 3 4 1
1 H + 1H → 2He + 0n No visible reaction fusion
4 7 10 1
2 He+ 3Li → 5B+ 0n No visible reaction Fusion
1 239 103 134 1
0 n + 94Pu → 40 Zr + 54 Xe +3 0n Huge explosion Fission

Post-Lab Connection Questions

Answer questions in complete sentences and show work.

1. Summarize the main observations you had during the chemical reaction videos. What
clues helped you determine the type of reaction? the reactions that happened in the tubes
and that showed me what type of reaction there was like color and flammability

2. Which of the chemical reactions are similar to fusion reactions? Which are like fission
reactions? Explain your answers. burning magnesium, electrolysis of water, and
magnesium and hydrochloric acid are more like fission reactions due to the prominent
reactions like bubbling. While lead (II) nitrate and potassium iodide had more subtle
reactions like color change

3. How are nuclear reactions used differently in the world than chemical reactions? Nuclear
reactions are used for more high energy application like medical treatment and power
generation while chemical reactions are used for things like manufacturing and
pharmaceuticals.
