How We Thought of This Idea

The idea behind Delta Paint emerged from a deep concern for industrial waste management and the
environmental cost of cement production. Cement is the most carbonintensive ingredient in concrete and is
responsible for eight per cent of global emissions. The demolition of industrial buildings leaves behind large
quantities of concrete waste, which is typically sent to landfills, where it disturbs the pH balance of the
surrounding soil. This resulted in the realization that concrete could be repurposed instead of discarded,
particularly because cement, a primary component of concrete, has the natural ability to absorb CO2.
Through research, we discovered that concrete, when processed properly, could not only be reused but could
also actively sequester carbon. This eureka moment led to the ideation of a sustainable paint that utilizes this
carboncapturing ability while simultaneously addressing the waste crisis caused by industrial demolition.
The concept leverages the inherent properties of cement to convert an environmental burden into a useful
product. Further inspiration came from the growing need for sustainable solutions in the construction and
design industry, as well as the increasing consumer demand for ecofriendly products.

Personal Connection to the Paint Industry

This project holds personal significance as my father owns a paint shop, which has given me a deep
understanding and appreciation for the paint industry. The idea of creating a paint that is not only functional
but also contributes to environmental sustainability aligns with my passion for both the paint business and
environmental conservation. This project merges my professional interests and personal values, creating a
solution that is close to my heart.

5. Introduction

5.1 The Global Problem of Industrial Waste

The construction and demolition industries produce vast amounts of waste, much of which is concrete. This
waste is typically buried in landfills. Even in the recycling process, the two components are separated, and
only aggregates are reused, while cement-based concrete powder ends up on the landfill, about 20 to 50% of
the total concrete amount recycled. Waste concrete powder is high in calcium oxide and once in the soil, the
waste powder alkalizes the ground and water by mixing with rainwater and groundwater, forming calcium
hydroxide, which is strongly alkaline causing severe environmental pollution. Additionally, air pollution from
industrial emissions continues to exacerbate global climate challenges, making the need for carbon-reducing
innovations more urgent than ever.

5.2 Urgency of Carbon Sequestration

Given the increasing scale of global warming, finding methods in order to reduce atmospheric carbon is a
critical challenge. Cement, one of the primary components of concrete, has a natural ability to absorb carbon
dioxide. Delta Paint leverages this property by turning demolished concrete into paint that actively captures
CO2 from the air, offering a sustainable solution for carbon sequestration.

5.3 Air Pollution and Emissions

Industrial emissions and vehicle exhaust are major sources of air pollution. The cement industry alone is
responsible for around 8% of global CO2 emissions. Traditional paints further add to this problem through the
emission of volatile organic compounds (VOCs), thereby adding to environmental degradation

5.4 Waste Management Issues

Landfills are increasingly filled with nonrecyclable industrial waste, including concrete, which creates both
physical and environmental challenges. Repurposing this waste into usable materials, such as carbon-
capturing paint, provides a sustainable alternative to landfill disposal.

7
6. Solution Overview: Delta Paint

6.1 Carbon Sequestration through Paint

Delta Paint, the indoor-outdoor paint is a groundbreaking product that captures and stores carbon dioxide
through mineral carbonation. Waste concrete is pulverized into fine powder, which reacts with CO2 in the air,
forming calcium carbonate (CaCO3). Compared to other carbon capture storage methods, mineral carbonation
stores CO2 in a stable form for a long time. This process not only reduces carbon emissions but also transforms
waste into a functional, everyday product.

6.2 Cement’s Unique Carbon Absorption Ability

Research has shown that cement absorbs approximately 43% of the CO2 produced during its manufacture.
Delta Paint harnesses this ability to create a carbon-neutral product, thereby reducing the overall
environmental impact of both the paint and construction industries. If 135 g of Delta Paints is fully
carbonated, it sequesters 27 g op CO2, the same amount of what a tree absorbs per day.

6.3 Comparison with Conventional Paints

Unlike traditional paints that contribute to VOC emissions and environmental harm, Delta Paint offers a
twofold benefit: it beautifies spaces while actively reducing CO2 in the atmosphere. This dual functionality
makes it a revolutionary product for both interior design and environmental sustainability.

7. Manufacturing Process

7.1 Sourcing Waste Concrete

The raw material for Delta Paint is sourced from demolished concrete structures. This waste is usually
discarded, but through this process, it is repurposed, reducing both material costs and environmental waste.

7.2 Production Process Breakdown

The production of Delta Paint involves several key steps:
1. Breaking down concrete: Demolished concrete is crushed into smaller pieces.
2. Pulverization: The concrete is then ground into a fine powder.
3. Filtration: Impurities are removed from the concrete powder.
4. Addition of water and binder: Pigments and binders, such as PVA, are mixed to create the paint.

7.3 Use of Pigments and Binders

8
Delta Paint is available in a variety of beautiful and unique colours and finishes, making it a versatile option
for both decorative and industrial uses. The use of polyvinyl acetate (PVA) as a binder ensures durability and
ease of application. Graphene, which can capture lots of carbon thanks to its structure, was also considered as
a binder but excluded because it is currently priced high and cannot be massproduced.

8. Delta Paints Unique Selling Propositions (USPs)

8.1 Pollution Reduction: Delta Paints helps reduce the detrimental effects of pollution on local
ecosystems, improving air and soil quality by utilizing industrial waste efficiently.
8.2 Eco-Friendly Carbon Capture: The paint absorbs the same amount of carbon dioxide that a tree
