Is it FAIR to all concerned?

HERBERT MUYINGA DEB LUYIIMA JOEY FERNANDEZ

Former District Governor International Services Director
Representing the Rotary Club of Muyenga, Uganda Diablo Creek Golf Course
TODAY’S SPEAKER

Program Chair Miles Bell introduced us to Joey Fernandez, the Executive Director of the Diablo Golf
Course who spoke to us about the golf club, but also introduced us to an outstanding program
called the First Tee of Contra Costa County. The First Tee is a year-round youth program established
to teach life skills and instill core values through the game of golf for boys and girls. The program
consists of golf skills, games and challenges, life skills education, golf etiquette, and green fee
discounts through the NCGA “Youth on Course” program at Diablo Creek Golf Course. Ninety-seven
percent of the kids who participate in this program go on to college.

The intent of this program is to provide a fun and safe learning environment for children interested in
golf, regardless of financial ability. The program inspires children to enjoy this great game, while they
learn social skills and values such as patience, courtesy, honesty and fairness. The First Tee of Contra
Costa’s Life/Golf Skills Experience is a youth development program for boys and girls ages 5-18. Kids
learn about golf and the skills and values inherent in the game. Participants who are in grades 2
through 12 starts at the PLAYer level and then progress through Par, Birdie, and Eagle levels. Target
classes are available to participants in grades K-1, Eagle and Birdie level participants are
encouraged to coach the Target, PLAYer, and Par level classes. Class sizes are limited, so sign up
early to secure your spot in class.

The East Bay Golf Foundation is a youth charity program at Diablo Creek Golf Course. Diablo Creek
Golf Course has been approved to be the site for The First Tee of Contra Costa which is an initiative of
the World Golf Foundation. They have an enrollment of 1,100 kids participating. Go to
www.thefirstteecontracosta.org for the schedules at other sites. Questions regarding any of our junior
programs or inquiry about our financial scholarship program should be directed to Lucio at
(925) 446-6701 or [email protected]

Also, Joey tells us that the club is retiring 120 golf carts, and they are all for sale. If you’re interested,
contact Miles who will give you Joey’s email or call the club at 925 686-6262.

ANNOUNCEMENTS EXPRESS…
CARS 2ND CHANCE: Lots to be happy about.

MARY KEMNITZ is always happy to report when donations come in. This week a member of the
Antioch Rotary made a second donation. It was a Chevy Impala. Larry Hutchings gave an impressive
earnings report. In 2020 we had 25 partners and brought in $94,000. This year we had 18 partners and
so far have brought in $110,000. Holy cow!!!! It is only July and we have five more months to go. Great
news that’s for sure.

UPCOMING CONFERENCE
DISTRICT CONFERENCE: President Monica reminded us to be sure and register for the October
29 - 31 District Conference that will take place at Squaw Creek. It promises to be a fun weekend. So
far, Monica, Mary and Dave, Barbara, Bob Sundberg, and Irene, will be attending. C2C will have a
booth so that will be a place to hang out. Sign up now.

IN-PERSON BOARD MEETING

The first in-person Board meeting took place July 13 at 7 am at the Buttercup Restaurant. Discussion
included how to set up hybrid club meetings particularly at Oakhurst. Johnny Morgan investigated
the possibility and degreed that it was possible. President Monica and Bob Sundberg will visit the
Lamorinda club and observe their success with setting up the process
and Tommy Wolf will investigate Concord Rotary’s set up.

Bill Selb is already thinking of new ideas for fundraisers and is looking
forward to definitely having a Pancake Breakfast next year. Many of
the members who devoted much time and muscle in the breakfast
are no longer with us, so it is imperative that ALL of us join the efforts to
produce a successful Pancake Breakfast event.

HAPPY BUCKS COMPILED BY BARBARA REIFSCHNEIDER

Barbara, speaking for herself, gave 5 happy bucks today because it

was so nice to see everyone at our first in-person board meeting.
Monica and her hubby are ecstatic that she was able to change her
plans and re-register for the District Conference. She will be traveling
up to the conference in the backseat of the Fraga SUV. Barbara said,
“They don’t know what a third wheel I can be.”

Monica Fraga is going to match Barbara’s

5 buck donation because she will be
accompanying them to what looks like a fun
conference.

Rich Lueck gave a happy 5 bucks today.

Apparently he had a problem with his credit
card and Irene Davids-Blair straightened out
the whole
problem. Rich was
also happy that
this made his wife happy too. He zoomed
with us in his car as he was speeding to pick
her up from Sonoma.

Torsten Jacobson gave 5 happy bucks for advice on how to deal with his
hair. Which color should he dye it? Red or Green? And how about how
he should style it? Do you like what he did here? Let him know.

Jeff Wilson had 20 happy bucks because he is going to be celebrating

multifamily anniversaries. He is even happier because he just closed on
two properties and has 9 listings in the pipeline.
THE RAFFLE
Monica Fraga did the honors today and picked Larry
Hutchings who selected red wine as his prize.

Don’t forget,
you have to attend
a meeting
to be eligible
for this drawing.

TAKE YOUR PICK, LARRY

FRANTIC CALL
A fellow nurse at my hospital received a call from an anxious patient.

The caller said, “I’m diabetic and I’m afraid I’ve had too much sugar today,”

“Well, let’s see,” said the nurse, “do you feel any symptoms? Are you light-headed?”

“No,” the caller answered, “I’m a brunette.”

COLORS OF THE FLAG
A Dutchman was explaining the red, white and blue Netherlands flag to an
American.

“Our flag is symbolic of our taxes. We get red when we talk about them,
white when we get our tax bills, and blue after we pay them.”

The American nodded. “It’s the same in the USA only we see stars too!”
. . . That’s all folks.
