La Tomatina is a tomato fight festival in the town of Bunol (pronounced: Boon-Yol), near to
Valencia in Spain. On the last Wednesday of August each year, thousands of people come
from all corners of the world to fight in this "World's Biggest Food Fight".
At around 11 a.m., many trucks pull a large amount of tomatoes into the center of the town,
Plaza del Pueblo. The tomatoes come from Extremadura, where they are less expensive, when
the festival doesn't start, one brave person has to climb to the top of a high wooden pole and
try to get the ham at the top. In practice, this process takes a long time, and the festival starts
although no one reaches that prize. The signal for the beginning of the fight is the shooting of
water cannons, and the chaos begins: they throw over-ripe tomatoes at each other.
The fighting ends after an hour, and people start cleaning. They use fire trucks to spray down
the streets. The authorities seem more concerned with cleaning the town than cleaning the
visitors, so some people find water at the Bunol River to wash themselves, although some

Birthday Celebrations from Europe
In some parts of Europe, they have a birthday tree planted when the new child is born. This
was done as they believed that if the tree grew to be healthy and strong, the child would also.
The tradition of birthday parties began in Europe centuries ago. It was feared that evil spirits
searched out people on their birthdays. To protect the birthday person from harm, friends and
family would gather around them and bring good thoughts and wishes. Giving gifts brought
even more good cheer to ward off the evil spirits.
At first, only kings and royalty were recognized as important enough to have a birthday
celebration.
Birthday Celebrations from England
In England, there are cakes known as Fortune Telling Cakes which are made for the birthday.
Certain symbolic objects are mixed into the birthday cake as it is being prepared. If your piece
of cake has a coin in it, then you will be rich.
Also, when it's your birthday, your friends give you the "bumps", they lift you in the air by
your hands and feet and raise you up and down to the floor, one for each year, then one for
luck, two for luck, and three for the old man's coconut!
Sending birthday cards is a custom that began in England about 100 years ago. Today,
millions of cards are sent around the world each year to wish family and friends a happy
birthday.
Being given the key to the house is still considered an important sign of coming of age in
England. This takes place when someone turns the age of twenty-one. The young man who
was given the key to the house is said to have been given permission to come and go as he
pleases and to stay out as late as he likes.

Ramadan is a time to spend with friends and family. The fast will often be broken by families
and friends meeting together to share in an evening meal. Not everyone has to fast, children,
old people, people who are sick and pregnant women can all eat during Ramadan. It's not all
about food though, Muslims also try to give up bad habits during Ramadan and try to become
better Muslims by praying more and giving in charity. Each night, there are special services in
mosques during which the Quran is read.
The end of Ramadan is marked by a big celebration called "Eid al-Fitr" Muslims are not only
celebrating the end of fasting, but thanking Allah for the help and strength that he gave them
throughout the previous month to help them fast. The festival begins when the first sight of
the new moon is seen in the sky. During Eid al-Fitr, Muslims dress in their best clothes, give
gifts to children, and spend time with their friends and family. At Eid, each family has to give

Vietnamese Wedding Traditions and Customs
The wedding consists of several ceremonies including asking permission to receive the bride,
the procession to receive the bride, the procession to the groom's house, the second ancestor
ceremony, and the banquet party.
In the morning, the groom's mother and a few close relatives would walk to the bride's house
with a gift to ask permission to receive the bride at her house. This ceremony was often done
in the times of arranged marriages to ensure that the bride had not fled from the home and that
the wedding was still taking place.
In the procession to receive the bride, the groom and his family often carry decorated lacquer
boxes covered in red cloth to represent his wealth and which include various gifts for the
bride's family. There are either 6 or 8 boxes, but never 7 because it is bad luck.
After paying their respects to their ancestors, the bride and groom will serve tea to their
parents who will then give them advice regarding marriage and family. During the candle
ceremony, the bride and groom's families union is celebrated, and the mother-in-law of the
bride will open the boxes filled with jewelry and dress her new daughter-in-law in the
jewelry.
Finally, the groom officially asks for permission to take his new bride home, and they make
their way back to his house. During the banquet, there is usually a 7 - 10 course meal, and the
bride and groom make their rounds to each table to express their gratitude and collect their
gifts.

Scientists around the world agree that the key to staying healthy and keeping fit is to eat less
and do physical exercise such as walking or cycling. However, people who exercise too
intensively often reward themselves by spending the rest of the day in front of the TV set. At
the same time, they have to eat more to give them energy for the next workout. To avoid
gaining weight, researchers suggest that going for a longer walk or riding a bike for a few
hours may actually be better than high-energy exercise.
A low-fat diet may be good for your waistline, but research suggests it may have negative
psychological effects. Medical experts have found out that volunteers who followed a strict
twenty-five percent fat diet reported feelings of depression and bad mood.
Many of us already know that drinking coffee raises your blood pressure, but according to the
latest studies, it too, can make you bad-tempered. Mice that were given regular doses of
caffeine by researchers turned out to be more aggressive than others. On the other hand,
chemicals found in tea can reduce the risk of heart attacks and have a positive effect on
cholesterol levels and high blood pressure.
