“BIBLE”

› The word Bible comes from the Greek


ta biblia, that means ‘the books.’ When
this word was taken over into Latin, it
became singular, the Bible
GOD
›INERRANT
–Making no mistakes
or errors. Scripture
is inerrant; that is, it
always teaches
truth, never
falsehood.
› The books of Scripture firmly,
faithfully, and without error, teach the
truth which God wished to see in
Sacred Scripture.
› God writes without bias because he
sees everything exactly the way it is.
a. The Bible as Inspired
Inspired
BIBLE
› The word “testament” it is the same word as the
Latin testamentum, which translates the Hebrew
word meaning “covenant”. A covenant is a sacred
agreement between God and His people.
› So the Bible is the collection of books which tells us
about the covenant, the agreement, which God
made with Israel through Abraham (the old
covenant) and which He fulfilled in Jesus (the new
covenant)

b. The Bible as “Library”
› The Bible is more than a book, it is a
library.
–The Hebrew Bible, known to Christians as
the Old Testament (OT), is largely a record
of the Hebrew deity’s dealings with the
chosen people, Israel. It contains legal
material/law, narrative/history, poetry , major
prophecy, and minor prophecy, and
Deuterocanonical books
› The New Testament (NT) consists of
narratives of Jesus’ life (Gospels),
theological/historical account of the
early Church (Acts), Pauline letters,
general letters, and apocalypse
(revelation of future history)
CANON
-the word canon comes from a Greek
word that means “ standard” or
“measurement”. It simply refers to the list
of writings that are considered
authoritative within a religious group.
- It means rule or measure.
3 sources used to determine canonicity
› Orthodoxy- conformed to
Christ’s message.
› Apostolicity- traceable to the
Apostles.
› Catholicity- used in the Liturgy of
the Universal Church.
PART OF THE BIBLE
1. Books of Israel’s Beginnings. These are the
Books of the Law, also known as The
Pentateuch. They are the first five books of the
Bible and of the Old Testament popularly
referred to as the Books of Moses. They are:
–Genesis
–Exodus
–Leviticus
–Numbers
–Deuteronomy
2. Historical Books. These are the books containing a
detailed History of Israel and they are the next twelve Old
Testament books, namely:
– Joshua
– Judges
– Ruth
– 1 Samuel
– 2 Samuel
– 1 Kings
– 2 Kings
– 1 Chronicles
– 2 Chronicles
– Ezra
– Nehemiah
– Esther
3. Poetry Books. These are also known as the
Books of Everyday Wisdom or The Writings.
They are the next five books, namely:

–Job.
–Psalms
–Proverbs
–Ecclesiastes
–Songs of Solomon
4. Books of the Prophets. These are sub
divided into two, five Major and 12 Minor
Prophets, which end the Old Testament,
namely:
› (a) Major Prophets
–Isaiah
–Jeremiah
–Lamentations
–Ezekiel
–Daniel
› Minor Prophets
– Hosea
– Joel
– Amos
– Obadiah
– Jonah
– Micah
– Nahum
– Habakkuk
– Zephaniah
– Haggai
– Zechariah
– Malachi
What are “DEUTEROCANONICAL” books.
NEW TESTAMENT
1. The Gospels. Consisting of four books,
named after the writers who had been with
Jesus.
–Matthew
–Mark
–Luke
–John
2. History of the Christian (New
Testament) Church, also known as the
Acts of the Holy Spirit, namely:

–Acts of the Apostles


3. The Epistles: These are Letters which are divided into two,
namely:
› (a) Pauline Epistles: Letters written by Paul the Apostle to
specified Churches.
– Romans
– 1 Corinthians
– 2 Corinthians
– Galatians
– Ephesians
– Philippians
– Colossians
– 1 Thessalonians
– 2 Thessalonians
– 1 Timothy
2 Timothy
Titus
Philemon
› General Epistles:
› One written to the Jewish Christians in general,
believed to be written by the Apostle Paul, but not
confirmed by contemporary Bible Scholars, namely;
– (1) Hebrews
› (2) Seven Letters written to Christians generally,
named after the writers.
– James
– 1 Peter
– 2 Peter
– 1 John
– 2 John
– 3 John
– Jude
4. THE BOOK OF THE END: This is the
last book of the Bible, and of the New
Testament, known as:
–The Revelations
› The Catholic edition has an “ Imprimatur”
( which means “ it can be printed” ) and a “
Nihil Obstat” (meaning “ nothing opposes”),
signed by a monsignor or a bishop on the
copyright page; the Protestant edition does not
have these.
› 2. New Testament books: 27 in both editions.
Differences in catholic and Protestant
Bible
› The Catholic edition of the Bible, with 47 books are the
following: New American Bible (NAB), Jerusalem Bible
(JB), Christian Community Bible (CCB), Revised Standard
Version (RSV), new Revised Standard Version – Catholic
Editions (NRSV).
› Meanwhile, the good News Bible/ Today’s English Version
(GNB/TEV) has 51 books. The King James Version (KJV),
New International Version (NIV), and Gideon Bible has 39
books and are Protestant edition of the Bible.
