Worksheet – RAY OPTICS

1. A ray of light incident on face AB of an isosceles triangular prism makes an angle of
incidence i and deviates by angle β as shown in the figure. Show that in position of
minimum deviation β = μ1α.

Also find out the condition when the refracted ray QR suffers total
internal reflection
2. a) A ray of light incident on face AB of an equilateral glass prism shows minimum
deviation of 30o. Calculate the speed of light through the prism.

b) Find the angle of incidence at face AB so that the emergence ray grazes along
the face AC.
3. Derive the mathematical relation between refractive indices n 1 and n2 of two
lenses and radii of curvature R for refraction at a convex spherical surface.
Consider the object to be a point since lying on the principle axis in rarer medium
of refractive index n1 and a real image formed in the denser medium of refractive
index n2. Hence, derive lens maker’s formula.
4. A lens of refractive index μ becomes a lens of focal length f1 when immersed in a
liquid of refractive index μ1. If the focal length of the lens in air is f, prove that f 1= f
μ1(μ-1)/( μ- μ1).
5. a) In viewing through a magnifying glass, one usually positions one’s eyes very
close to the lens. Does angular magnification change if the eye is moved back?
b) Write two characteristics of image formed when an object is placed between
the optical centre and focus of a thin convex lens. Draw the graph showing
variation of image distance v with object distance u in this case.
6. A giant refracting telescope at an observatory has an objective lens of focal length
15m and eyepiece of focal length 1cm. If this telescope is used to view the moon,
find the diameter of image of moon formed by the objective lens. The diameter of
the moon is 3.48 x 106m and the radius of lunar orbit is 3.8 x 108 m.
7. An optical instrument uses an objective lens of power 100D and eyepiece of power
40D. The final image is formed at infinity when the tube length of the instrument is
kept at 20cm. a) Identify the optical instrument b) Calculate the angular
magnification produced by the instrument.
8. a) An angular magnification of 30 X is desired using an objective of focal length
1.25cm and an eye piece of focal length 5cm. How will you set up the compound
microscope for the final formed at least distance of distinct vision?
b) A small telescope has an objective lens of focal length 140cm and eyepiece of
focal length 5cm.i) Find the magnifying power of the telescope is in normal
adjustment, ii) the final image is formed at the least distance of distinct vision.
