Learning Reflection #4: What is "lifelong learning?

"
So far, our Reflections have focused on what we're good at and not-so-good at. Hopefully,
identifying some of your strengths areas for improvements has helped you to also think
about your potential skills, talents, and interests. In this Reflection, we will integrate our
aptitudes and abilities with the content discussed on types of knowledge and ways of
knowing (epistemology).n.认识论
Aptitude n.天资,天赋;自然的倾向,习性;适宜
To do so, we'll consider a term that is popular in discussions around education, schooling,
and training: lifelong learning.

Lifelong learning includes the continuing, voluntary, and self-motivating search for
knowledge. According to the Commission of the European Communities (2006), lifelong
learning "not only enhances social inclusion, active citizenship, and personal development,
but also self-sustainability, as well as competitiveness and employability." As society
changes, it is very likely that employees will need to continually develop skills that rely on
effective learning strategies. In other words, learning is much more than schooling!(学校教育)
For this Learning Reflection, I'd like you to complete this activity and respond in this forum.
You should allow at least 45 minutes for this activity.

Activity Instructions:

1. Begin an Internet search at the UNESCO Institute for Lifelong Learning at

https://uil.unesco.org/. Set a timer for 10 minutes and just allow yourself explore
and take notes on whatever facts and questions that come to you. This website
includes many interesting policies, reports, and publications.
2. Let's shift to lifelong learning in New Zealand. Set a timer for 20 minutes and read
and take notes from this Stuff article by Adele Redmond (2019). How do you feel
microcredentials relate to lifelong learning? What are some of the challenges we
face in New Zealand? Add these to your notes.
3. Evaluate your visual collage from previous Reflections. Are there things that
represent lifelong learning for you? Are there things you do that develop your
abilities and do not require any outside incentive?

The purpose of this activity is to begin to question the meaning of learning in our everyday
lives. We possess aptitudes and abilities, and these will continue throughout our lives.
Some people hold a belief that learning and professional development are exciting.
However, for others, this can be daunting!

To begin your forum post, you can click on the blue button at the bottom of
these instructions "Add a new discussion topic." Briefly, answer the following
questions:

1. Considering our previous Reflections and course content, do you consider yourself
to be a lifelong learner? Why or why not?
2. "Schools have a responsibility to foster a mentality of 'lifelong learning' in
students." Do you agree or disagree? Why or why not?

Once you have submitted your Reflection, make a brief comment, or ask a question, on at
least two other students' posts.

I consider myself a lifelong learner. Besides formal education, I

explore various subjects outside of school and find my own
interests. I enjoy diving into interesting and random topics and am
open to trying new things. I believe most people are lifelong
learners, as our surroundings and circumstances constantly change.
We need to adapt and stay current with these changes in both
learning and life.
I think schools do have a responsibility to develop a lifelong learning mindset, which will enable
students to continue to maintain their love of learning after graduation and keep taking the
initiative to learn new things, both at work and in life. Schools are not only places to impart
knowledge, but they should also help students develop the right attitudes, concepts and values,
such as a lifelong learning mentality
