Culture and society are concepts. They exist in the realm of ideas and thoughts. As
such, they cannot be seen or touched and yet they influence the way we see and experience
our individual and collective lives as social beings.
What is interesting about concepts is that as conceptual tools, they allow us to form
other concepts, or relate concepts to each other, or even deconstruct old ones and replace
them with something new. With the concept of culture, anthropologists are able to explore
and make sense of the complex processes and dynamics that characterize the great variety
of “ways of living” practiced and observed around the world.
Material culture consists of things that are created by humans. Examples include cars,
buildings, clothing, and tools. Nonmaterial culture refers to the abstract ideas and ways of

Language makes effective social interaction possible and influences how people conceive of

*Nationality - It is the country that the person is born in, and/or the country that the
person currently lives in.
*Ethnicity - It is the culture of the person and is a very crucial aspect of cultural identity as
the person usually has the culture of his/her respective ethnicity.

* Education – could be formal and non-formal
