The skier in the figure below is skiing on a frictionless track.

Assume the skier starts from rest at the y= H position shown in the figure. The initial height H is given to
be 24 m.

Passage 3: The International Space Station is orbiting at an altitude of about 370 km above the earth's
surface. The mass of the earth is 5.97 × 1024 kg, the radius of the earth is 6.38 × 106 m, and G = 6.67 ×
10-11 N ∙ m2/kg2. Assume a circular orbit

Problem 7 – Rotational Dynamics (15 Points)

Problems 7A-7C refer to Passage 5 below.

Passage 5: Two masses m1 and m2 (m2 > m1) hang from a pulley of mass M and
radius R. The pulley can be modeled as a solid disc.

The system accelerates (m2 accelerates downwards with acceleration a). T1 and
T2 are the tensions in the cables as shown.

In order to find the tensions in the cables and the acceleration of the system –
you need 3 independent equations. You do not need to solve for a, T1 and T2 –
i.e. you can leave the answers as equations.

All answers must be in terms of the given knowns (m1, m2, M, R) and unknowns
(a, T1, T2).

7A. [4 Points] Draw a Free Body diagram for m 1, and write Newton’s 2nd law for m1.

Passage 6: A uniform disk turns at 4.1 rev/s around a frictionless central axis. A
nonrotating rod, of the same mass as the disk and length equal to the disk’s diameter, is
dropped onto the freely spinning disk. They then turn together around the spindle with
