Tuangou
What is Tuangou? Tuangou is the Chinese word for ‘team buying’. Of course, the best way of describing Tuangou
is with an example. Let’s say you want to buy an expensive TV. All you have to do to get a better price is to find a
lot of people who want the same thing. Then, all of you rush to a shop and demand a special price for your group.
Team buying started in China in 2004. The Chinese organised these Tuangou groups in chat rooms. Tuangou
works because as a group you have the power to ask for a better deal. Moreover, most store owners agree to it
because they feel they have no choice. They either offer a better price or miss out on a large sale.
Unfortunately, it is taking longer for Western countries to join in. This is because people in these parts of the
world are not as willing to share information about products on the Net. The Chinese, though, love to get
together to save money. This is understandable because bargaining, the act of trying to agree on a price with
a street trader, is not new to China. It has been part of Chinese culture for centuries.
Today, shoppers don’t have to organise their own groups. There are new businesses that do all the work. These
companies have their own websites that any consumer can join. Unfortunately, a lot of these sites deal with
shops in China. So if you’re not from that part of the world, you’ll have to start your own Tuangou group the old-
fashioned way.

The Mystery Shopper

After I finished school, I took a summer job for some extra money before I went to university. I worked as a
mystery shopper. I looked just like a(n) 1) _____ customer as it was very important the shop assistants didn’t
know who I was. All I had to do was go into a shop, look around, ask for help from the shop assistant and buy
something. Afterwards, I used to give them marks on their service and send those marks to my employer. It was
to find out (in secret, of course) how well shops treat their customers. It’s important that shop owners know that
their staff are good and that shoppers are happy in their stores.
I didn’t have to pay for anything, but I didn’t get to take anything home either. I went in lots of shops from the
biggest department stores to the smallest antique shops. I even visited a hair and beauty 2) _____ once! The
shops were all over town and I used to go in three or four every day. It was very tiring, and the money wasn’t very
good, but I definitely 3) _____ it for people who love shopping!
