Answer the following question. Time allowed – 2 hours.

Question

A Flyback converter is to be designed for a low power application which requires the converter to
have following design parameters given in Table 1.

Table 1: Design Parameters

Parameter Value
Input voltage (Vin) 36V to 72V
Output voltage (Vout) 12V
Output current (Iout) 1A
Operation mode DCM
Maximum duty cycle (D max) 0.4
Switching frequency (fsw) 150kHz
Estimated efficiency () 80%

For the above Flyback converter, calculate the followings

1). Maximum primary inductor value when the converter works at the full power.
2). Required turns ratio (approximate to the nearest integer value). Consider the diode’s forward
voltage drop (0.7V) in the calculation.

3). Maximum number of secondary winding turns if the number of primary windings is set to 20.
4). Maximum voltage that the switch has to withstand with a 10% safety margin.

5). Maximum current through the switch.

6). Maximum voltage that the diode can withstand with a 30% safety margin.

7). Required output capacitor value to give an output ripple voltage of 10mV.
8). Implement the above converter in PLECS software and validate your calculations adding
graphs containing schematic diagram, primary current, secondary current, switch voltage &
current, diode voltage & current, capacitor current & voltage and load voltage & load current).
