Item 2

Charity is a senior One student who was asked by her chemistry

teacher to heat a sample of 10 grams of magnesium metal which
she was given by her laboratory attendant. After heating, Charity
reweighed her sample and found out that the mass had increased
to 14 grams.

Task

a) Identify the type of change that took place on the magnesium

that Charity heated

__________________________________________________________________
________________________________________________

b) What characteristic of the change you have mentioned did she

notice during the heating process?

__________________________________________________________________
________________________________________________

c) In another experiment, Charity heated a piece of candle and

observed that it melted to form a liquid. How is this type of
change different from that of the heated magnesium metal?

Item 3

In a certain survey done to the residents around a sewage

treatment plant, it was observed that many people around the
plant are complaining about the bad smell that comes out of the
plant. They also noted that during a hot day, the bad smell
becomes so much more that they are forced to move away from
their homes and return only at night when it reduces.

Task

a) Identify the process through which the bad smell from the
sewage treatment plant reaches the residents.

__________________________________________________________________

b) Explain briefly how the bad smell molecule is able to move

from the sewage treatment plant to the people around it.

d) Identify any one way by which the people can control the bad
smell.

Item 4

The substances we commonly use in our daily life are either

compounds, mixtures or molecules. Some of these substances are
pure while others are not, as they contain more than one
constituent.
