1. Cognitive science: An
interdisciplinary endeavor
• Cognitive Science: the
scientific study of the mind
and mental phenomena. Sloan foundation’s 1978 report
• Interdisciplinary nature of
cognitive science:
–Linguistics: abstract structure of
language (linguistic competence)
–Psychology: mechanisms underlying
mental phenomena/behavior.
–Neuroscience: how the brain works
–Computer science: models simulating
human cognitive abilities
–Anthropology: social and cultural
dimension of cognition
–Philosophy: abstract models of how
the mind is realized by the brain
–… some others nowadays.

What is cognitive science now?
• Cognitive Science: the scientific study of the mind
and mental phenomena.

2. Levels of explanation: The contrast
between psychology and neuroscience
• How is psychology organized?
– A continuity of methodology
across different subfields.
– Different subfields operate at the
same level - cognitive
performance and behavior at the
level of the whole organism.

– Subfields are different types of

cognitive/emotional capacities.

organized? recording
-It follows the different levels
of organization in the brain neuroimaging
and central nervous system.
-Activity at one level of
organization is the result of
activity at lower levels of
organization.
-Different levels have
tools with different
resolutions.

6
Studies at different levels of organization involve different techniques
and tools with different spatial and temporal resolution.

3. The challenge of cognitive science
• Different fields in cognitive science vary in 3 dimensions:
– Levels of organization being studied (e.g., subfields in
Neuroscience)

– Techniques and tools employed.

– Cognitive abilities (domains) being studies (e.g., subfields

in Psychology)
