Lesson Plan: Exploring Shapes and Similar Objects

Grade Level: Grade 1

Content Standard:

Recognize and describe shapes in the environment.

Identify and compare similar objects based on their shapes.
Performance Standard:
Students will be able to:

Identify common shapes (e.g., squares, circles, triangles, rectangles).

Compare objects and determine if they are similar based on their shapes.
Learning Competencies:

Recognize and name common shapes.

Identify similarities and differences between objects based on their shapes.
Enduring Understanding:
Shapes are all around us, and similar objects often share common shapes.

Essential Questions:

What shapes do you see in the world around you?

How can we tell if objects are similar based on their shapes?
Transfer Goal:
Students will be able to apply their understanding of shapes and similarities to real-life situations, such as sorting
objects or identifying patterns.

Explore:

Begin by discussing different shapes with the students. Show examples of common shapes (square, circle, triangle,
rectangle) and ask students to identify them.
Take a shape walk around the classroom or school, pointing out shapes in the environment. Encourage students to
find and name shapes they see.
Introduce the concept of similar objects by showing examples of objects with the same shape but different sizes (e.g.,
different-sized circles).
Firm Up:

Review the names of common shapes with the students. Use flashcards or a shape sorting activity to reinforce their
understanding.
Discuss what it means for objects to be similar. Explain that similar objects have the same shape but may be different
sizes or colors.
Provide examples of pairs of objects and ask students to identify if they are similar or not based on their shapes.
Deepen:

Engage students in a hands-on activity where they sort objects based on their shapes. Provide a variety of objects
(e.g., blocks, toys, classroom items) and have students sort them into groups based on shape.
Introduce the concept of patterns using shapes. Create simple patterns (e.g., circle-square-circle) and ask students
to continue the pattern.
Encourage students to create their own artwork using shapes. Provide shape stencils or cut-outs for students to use,
and ask them to create a picture using different shapes.
Closure:
Review the key concepts learned in the lesson: recognizing common shapes, identifying similarities between objects
based on their shapes, and understanding the concept of patterns. Encourage students to continue looking for
shapes in their environment and noticing similarities between objects.
