PART III: Writing

There are 15 points for this task: - 5 points maximum for content and
- 5 points maximum for language, multiplied by 2.

Pupils are not expected to produce faultless English:

To achieve 15 points, a pupil should write a cohesive text which successfully communicates all
three parts of the message (the people at the party, what you did there, the most exciting moment
(why?)) and contains only few minor errors.

Points CONTENT
All content elements covered with some detail.
5
Message clearly communicated to reader.

4 (Criteria from 5 and 3)

All content elements mentioned.
Message communicated successfully, on the whole.
3
OR

One content element omitted but others clearly communicated.

2 (Criteria from 3 and 1)

Little relevant content.

1
Message requires excessive effort by the reader.

0 Totally irrelevant.

Points (x2) LANGUAGE

There are almost no errors in the text. Minor errors may occur when attempting
5
more complex language.

4 There are some minor, but almost no major errors.

There are several minor, and few major errors, but they do not impede
3
communication.
There are many minor and several major errors, which distract the reader and
2
may obscure communication at times.
Frequent errors which obscure communication; little evidence of language
1
control.

0 Totally incomprehensible.

Pupils are not penalised if they write more than 60 words.

If pupils use less than 45 words, they automatically lose 1 point out of 5 in the language section.
If they write less than 30 words, they automatically lose 2 points out of 5 in the language section.
Scripts whose content marks are 0 must not be marked for the other category (language).

LISTENING: TAPESCRIPT

Task 1

1
I think it’s a great place. I usually go there with my children, especially on a Saturday afternoon. They love
seeing their favourite players running on the field and enjoy the atmosphere there. It’s a pity my wife
doesn’t come. She prefers to watch these things on TV.

2
I really like it. On weekday mornings women and children can go there at 8.15 but men can only go in after
11.30. It’s nice because there are no big boys jumping in and throwing balls around. We usually stay for an
hour and go to the café for a cup of hot chocolate after we come out of the changing rooms.

3
I’ve only just moved in and it looks a mess already. I don’t know where to put all my things and the shelves
are much too big for the living-room. So I have my books and magazines lying around all over the place.
It’s quite small but a lot cheaper than my old one. Maybe I need to buy some new furniture.

4
I can spend hours in here. There is so much to see. The best place is in the area where you can see how
people lived and worked a long time ago. You can walk through an old kitchen and bedroom and you can
find out how the first washing machines worked.

Task 2

Man: Good morning. Can I help you?

Girl: Good morning. I’m looking for a holiday job. Maybe as a waitress or a cleaner.
Man: Hm. Let me see… All I have at the moment is a job for a receptionist.
Girl: Is that in the new hotel in the town centre?
Man: It’s in a sports centre not far from Westport shopping centre. How old are you?
Girl: Nineteen on Saturday.
Man: Fine. They only want people who are eighteen or older.
Girl: That’s good. In a lot of jobs you have to be twenty.
Man: Right… when can you start?
Girl: Well, school finishes on the twenty-third. So I can begin on the twenty-fourth.
Man: OK. They need someone to work from the twenty-sixth, so that’s perfect.
Girl: What about the working hours? Are they from nine to five?
Man: You’ll have to work from half past eight to half past four. Only on Sundays you’ll start
earlier, at quarter past eight and you finish earlier, too, at quarter past four.
Girl: And what about clothes? Must I wear black trousers?
Man: You can wear trousers of any colour you like – that’s not important, but your shirt must be
white.
Girl: That sounds really good. Shall I give you my name and address?

Task 3

Hello, I’m afraid we’re not in at the moment. Please leave a message after the beep.

Good morning, this is Mike’s bike shop. The mountain bike you ordered for your son last week has just
arrived. There’s only one thing… your son wanted a green bike. Well, I’m afraid the company got it wrong
and sent us an electric blue one instead. I hope that’s no problem… The good news is: I can give you a
special price because of the wrong colour. The original price was one hundred and twenty-nine pounds, but
I can give it to you for one hundred and nineteen pounds. And on top of that you’ll get something for free:
You can have special bicycle lights or bike shorts or a helmet. You can pick up the bike any time before six
thirty. Or if you can’t make it today, we’re open again tomorrow from eight to half past six. If you have any
further questions, feel free to contact us. The number is 020 7930 2522. That’s 020 7930 2522. Thanks.
