QUESTION 1
a) Define Engineering Geology. Explain in brief its importance to the civil engineer for
the investigation of any infrastructure development.

a) Define mineral. What are their physical properties? How do these properties help
identifying different mineral? (15 marks)
b) What is meant by rock cycle, and how does it represent the sequence of formation of
three important types of rocks? (10 marks)

a) Write a critical essay on weathering and its significance in engineering construction?

b) Discuss what you know about the processes of Sedimentation. (5 marks)

a) What are joints in rocks? How do they influence the strength of rocks? (3 marks)
b) Calculate the factor of safety against sliding failure for the block shown in the sketch
below, given that H = 4.0 ft, L = 17.5 ft, the unit weight is 155 PCF, friction angle
along the sliding surface is 34˚, and the tension applied by horizontal rock bolts is
2500 lb per linear foot of slope (into the page). (7 marks)
c) What is the difference between a scalar quantity and a vector quantity? (3 marks)
d) What is "compressive rock strength"? (4 marks)
e) A steel cylinder with a mass of 6.5 x 10 22 kg is placed on a concrete pad with
dimensions of 8m x 8m, g = 9.8 m/sec2.
(i) What is the force exerted on the pad in N? (2 marks)
(ii) What is the normal stress applied by the steel cylinder to the concrete pad in MPa?
