Culture is the lens with which we evaluate everything around us; we evaluate what is proper
or improper, normal or abnormal, through our culture. If we are immersed in a culture that is unlike
our own, we may experience culture shock and become disoriented when we come into contact
with a fundamentally different culture. People naturally use their own culture as the standard to
judge other cultures; however, passing judgment could reach a level where people begin to
discriminate against others whose “ways of being” are different than their own—essentially, we
tend to fear that which we do not understand.
Cultural diversity is important because our country, workplaces, and schools increasingly
consist of various cultural, racial, and ethnic groups. We can learn from one another, but first we
must have a level of understanding about each other in order to facilitate collaboration and
cooperation. Learning about other cultures helps us understand different perspectives within the
world in which we live and helps dispel negative stereotypes and personal biases about different
groups.
In addition, cultural diversity helps us recognize and respect “ways of being” that are not
necessarily our own, so that as we interact with others, we can build bridges to trust, respect, and
understanding across cultures. Furthermore, this diversity makes our country a more interesting
place to live, as people from diverse cultures contribute language skills, new ways of thinking,
new knowledge, and different experiences.

Environmentalists often fear that tourists will trample all over sensitive natural resource areas,
but tourism may bring the needed and only economic incentives to help drive conservation, said
Bynum Boley. Ecotourism and natural resource conservation already have a mutually beneficial
relationship that is ideal for creating a sustainable partnership.
"Ecotourism destinations benefit in the form of enhanced tourism competitiveness from the
protection of quality natural resources," he said. "Meanwhile, the conservation of these natural
resources is increasingly valued since these pristine natural resources are the foundation of the
ecotourism industry and the driver of all economic benefits associated with ecotourism."
Tourism is a $7.6 trillion global industry, provides 277 million jobs and is a primary income
source for 20 of the world's 48 least-developed countries. It also subsidizes environmental
protection and helps protect, conserve and value cultural resources that might otherwise be
undervalued by the host community, Boley said. In the newspaper, Boley and co-author Gary
Green said that despite past tension between the tourism industry and environmentalists, the two
should team up as allies to fight off increasing conversion of land away from its natural state,
Ecotourists not only provide a boost to the economy in such places, they can also motivate
landowners into keeping the environment in its natural state instead of converting it into
something unsustainable. They could also influence the public perception of conservation,
Boley explained, which does not often favor environmental protection.
“The public has become increasing less prone to respond to environmental messages,” he said.
“Economic messages are needed in order to attract the public's interest.” Too often, Boley
and Green said, unique natural resource areas are converted into urban, suburban and agricultural
developments without considering their ecotourism potential. In addition to the lost ecotourism
revenue, there are a host of negative environmental consequences such as biodiversity loss, water
and food shortages and the land being unable to mitigate the effects of climate change. These
areas are not valued for their unique attributes or the valuable natural resources they provide,
Green said, “so we lose them.” Tourists have historically been seen as having a negative impact
on the environment. Critics complain that they violate fragile and threatened natural
environments while contributing to greenhouse gases from the increased number of flights to
these exotic and often remote locales. While these criticisms are justified, Boley and Green said
responsible programs promote education of ecological conservation and environmental
sustainability, fostering a greater understanding and appreciation of these exotic areas.

the correct answer to each of the questions from 4 to 10.
For Sean O'Brien, it was just an ordinary night out with friends. He knew that people
sometimes mocked him for being overweight, and he was usually able to shrug it off. But this time,
as well as laughingat him in person, someone decided to publicly fat-shame him by posting a
video of him dancing online, with a hurtful comment. Sean was completely unaware of it, but
the post about him was shared widely, and it prompted a wave of abuse from immature Internet
trolls.
However, as well as the cyberbullies, other people were watching. A group of women in
California, who were campaigning to encourage people to have a positive body image whatever
their size, decided to take action. They put out a message on Twitter, inviting Sean on an all-
expenses- paid trip from Londonto Los Angeles, to meet and dance with them. When Sean's
friends first told him about the search for dancing man, he figured it was a bit of nonsense which
would soon blow over, and decided not to botherdoing anything about it.
But the movement got bigger and bigger. Sean rethought his decision, made contact, and the
women - all 1,700 of them - started raising money to throw him an extra-special party in LA. He
went tothe party in California. Sean had assumed that just a few people would turn up, but he
realised his mistakeas soon as he saw over 1,000 people queuing to get into the nightclub! Sean
danced all night and the storyof how he and the women's group in California took a stance against
cyberbullying was reported aroun the world. As a result of the event, some of the women set up
Dance Free Movement, an online forum where anyone who felt they had been bullied or
victimized could receive support. The 'dancing man' himself has become a fundraiser for several
anti-bullying charities.

Sean commented in an interview at the time that he was amazed that something which started
outso badly, had become such a positive movement. He said that he had actually never really
thought aboutthe people who posted the original images, concluding that they must have their
own insecurities, to put the spotlight on someone else so maliciously. Sean certainly had the last
laugh. We are often told that thebest idea is not to give bullies any attention, but it may be that
the best way to deal with cyberbullying isto act as these women did and be brave enough to make
it clear that we are uncomfortable with this kindof behaviour, that we disagree with what is being
said and that bullying is completely unacceptable.

Australians place a high value on independence and personal choice. This means that a teacher
orcourse tutor will not tell students what to do, but will give them a number of options and
suggest they work out which one is the best in their circumstances. It also means that they are
expected to take action if something goes wrong and seek out resources and support for
themselves.
Australians are also prepared to accept a range of opinions rather than believing there is one
truth. This means that in an educational setting, students will be expected to form their own
opinions and defendthe reasons for that point of view and the evidence for it.
Australians are uncomfortable with differences in status and hence idealise the idea of treating
everyone equally. An illustration of this is that most adult Australians call each other by their first
names. This concern with equality means that Australians are uncomfortable taking anything too
seriously and are even ready to joke about themselves.
Australians believe that life should have a balance between work and leisure time. As a
consequence, some students may be critical of others who they perceive as doing nothing but
study. Australian notions of privacy mean that areas such as financial matters, appearance and
relationships areonly discussed with close friends. While people may volunteer such information,
they may resent someone actually asking them unless the friendship is firmly established. Even
then, it is considered veryimpolite to ask someone what they earn. With older people, it is also
rude to ask how old they are, why they are not married or why they do not have children. It is
also impolite to ask people how much they have paid for something, unless there is a very good
reason for asking.

American jazz is a mixture of sounds borrowed from such varied sources as American and
African folk music, European classical music, and Christian gospel songs. One of the recognizable
characteristics of jazz is its use of improvisation: certain parts of the music are written out and
played the same way by various performers, and other improvised parts are created spontaneously
during a performance and vary widely from performer to performer.
The earliest form of jazz was ragtime, lively songs or rags performed on the piano, and the best-
known of the ragtime performers and composers was Scott Joplin. Born in 1868 to former
slaves, Scott Joplin earned his living from a very early age playing the piano in bars along the

Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C, or D on your answer sheet to indicate
the answer to each of the questions.
In the first half of the nineteenth century, the U.S. government decided that it needed to set up
a system for protecting its coastline. It then began building a series of forts along the coast of the
eastern part of the country to facilitate its defenses.
The largest of these forts was Fort Jefferson, which was begun in 1846. This fort was built on
Garden Key, one of a cluster of small coral islands 70 miles west of Key West. At the time of its
construction Fort Jefferson was believed to be of primary strategic importance to the United States
because of its location at the entryway to became known as the the Gulf of Mexico. Because of its
location at the entrance to a great body of water, Gibraltar of the Gulf, in reference to the island
located at the mouth of the Mediterranean. The fort itself was a massive structure. It was
hexagonal in shape, with 8- foot-thick walls, and was surrounded by a medieval-style moat for
added security. Covering most of the Garden Key, it was approximately half a mile in
circumference.
In the latter half of the nineteenth century, during the Civil War and its aftermath, the fort was
used as a prison rather than a military installation. The most notorious of its prisoners was Dr.
Samuel Mudd, a physician who was the most probably innocently involved in the assassination of
Abraham Lincoln. The actual assassin, John Wilkes Booth, broke his leg as he left from the stage
of the Ford Theater during the assassination. Dr. Mudd set Booth's broken leg, unaware of Booth's
involvement in the assassination. As a result of this action, Dr. Mudd was sentenced to life in
prison and remanded to Fort Jefferson. He was pardoned after only four years because of his
courageous efforts in combating an epidemic of yellow fever that ravaged the fort.
Continuous use of Fort Jefferson ended in the 1870s, although the U.S. Navy continued with
sporadic use of it into the twentieth century. Today, the massive ruins still remain on the tiny
island that stands guard over the entrance to the gulf, undisturbed except for the occasional
sightseer who ventures out from the coast to visit.

Universities love overseas students – they are clever and hardworking, they bring different
cultures toseminars and student life and they pay their way. In Britain, universities are getting
ready to enroll moreoverseas students. The British Council has published a report predicting that
overseas student numbers could soar to more than 800,000 by 2018. In 2010, figures put the total
at over 400,000 international students out of two and a half million students in UK higher
education and it is clear that this influx is having an enormous impact on universities and colleges.
These students bring welcome fees, of course, but they are also likely to be very intelligent
students who inject new cultural influences and bring changes to the old university systems. Their
demand for vocational subjects such as business, biotechnology and information technology,
rather than traditional academic subjects, is affecting what is taught as well.
The impressive expansion of foreign students has already had a significant impact on higher
education. Overseas student numbers, including European Union students, have risen from
270,000 in 2002 to 400,000 in 2010. During this time the number from China jumped more than
tenfold, and numbers from India have been going up. In contrast, the number of students from
other countries has fallen, reflecting their governments’ efforts to educate more of their young
people at home, as well as competition from Australia and the USA. But as the Asian tiger
economies expand their own universities, the good news for places like the London School of
Economics is that there are more and more graduates looking to improve their qualifications or
to pursue research in their subjects.
(Adapted from Gateway by Spencer and Edwards)

Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C, or D on your answer sheet indicating
the correct answer to each of the questions from 44 to 50.

A majority of people think that their dream job is too hard and competitive to achieve, and
believethat it is all a matter of luck. All this is true actually, but why should that stop anyone from
trying to get the job they really want? A really determined person will always succeed and, in
many ways, needs otherpeople to give up trying so that he or she can succeed.
Many job seekers feel limited by the choices they made at college or university. They may
think that because they studied marketing, all they can ever do is work in marketing. All the
evidence shows that, in fact, employers are less interested in acquired knowledge than the ability
to think and learn. It is also very difficult to predict the needs of society. The needs of employers
and the economy can change very quickly, and often unexpectedly.
Of course, if it is a very tough time economically, it is hard to find employment straight after
university, but it is by no means impossible. It might take several months longer to find a job after
graduating, but there is work out there. Never think about the other people going for the same jobs.
It maybe human nature to compare your progress to your peers, but perhaps the best advice would
be to try notto. Be focused on what you want and how you are going to get it. After all, it may
appear that a friend who has a really well-paid job is doing well, but how do you know what their
job is actually like? They may be working 12-hour days, have an unreasonable boss, or be
stressed out trying to meet unrealistic targets.
Have a plan in place, even if it is a sketchy one. Have both short-term and long-term aims.
Alwaysthink that with hard work, dedication, a willingness to put yourself out, and a bit of luck,
you could get your dream job. A really key piece of advice is never to get downhearted by
rejection because there will probably be a lot. You can achieve your dream job, whatever it is.
You must never give up. prepared to work hard and for long hours without necessarily climbing
up the career ladder. There is a lot to be said for learning your 'trade' from the bottom up. At the
start, there will probably be little money, but it will beworth it in the end. The best jobs are not
supposed to be easy- that is what makes them challenging. Andif you like a challenge, just keep
your head down and go for it.

Câu 44 - 50
Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C, or D on your answer sheet to
indicate the correct answer to each of the questions from 44 to 50.
Joyce Carol Oates published her first collection of short stories, By The North Gate, in
1963, two years after she had received her master's degree from the University of
Wisconsin and become an instructor of English at the University of Detroit. Her
productivity since then has been prodigious, accumulating in less than two decades to
nearly thirty titles, including novels, collections of short stories and verse, play and literary
criticism. In the meantime, she has continued to teach, moving in 1967 from the University
of Detroit to the University of Windsor, in Ontario, and, in 1978, to Princeton University
Reviewers have admired her enormous energy, but find a productivity of such magnitude
difficult to assess.
In a period characterized by the abandonment of so much of the realistic tradition by
authors such as John Barth, Donald Barthelme, and Thomas Pynchon, Joyce Carol Oates
has seemed at times determinedly old-fashioned in her insistence on the essentially mimetic
quality other fiction. Hers is a world of violence, insanity, fractured love, and hopeless
loneliness. Although some of it appears to come from her own direct observations, her
dreams, and her fears, much more is clearly from the experiences of others. Her first
novel With Shuddering Fall (1964), dealt with stock car racing, though she had never
seen a race. In Them (1969) she focused on Detroit from the Depression through the riots
of 1967, drawing much of her material from the deep impression made on her by the
problems of one of her students. Whatever the source and however shocking the events or
the motivations, however, her fictiveworld remains strikingly akin to that real one reflected
in the daily newspapers, the television news and talk shows, and popular magazines of our
day.

A. To review Oates' By the North Gate B. To compare some modern writers
C. To outline Oates career D. To describe Oates' childhood

publication?

46. Which of the following does the passage suggest about Joyce Carol Oates in terms of
her writing career?
A. Most of her work is based on personal experience.
B. Her style is imitative of other contemporary authors.
C. She has produced a surprising number of fictions in a relative short time.
D. She has experienced long nonproductive periods in her writing.
47. The word "fictive" in the passage is closest in meaning to_______.
A. imaginary B. attractive C. helpful D.
impressive
48. What was the subject of Joyce Carol Oates' first novel?
A. Loneliness B. Racing C. Teaching D. Insanity
49. Why does the author mention Oates' book Them?
A. It is her best piece of nonfiction
B. It is an autobiography
C. It is a typical novel of the 1960's.
D. It is a fictional work based on another person's experiences.
50. Which of the following would Joyce Carol Oates be most likely to write?
A. A romance novel set in the nineteenth century
B. A story with an unhappy ending
C. A dialogue for a talk show
D. A science fiction novel

Have you ever felt that there aren't enough hours in the day? These days we have to do our
jobs, look after our homes, save energy to help the environment, and do exercise to stay
healthy! Like many of us, Alex Gadsden never had enough time. He ran a business and a
home and needed to lose weight. So he decided to do something about it. He invented the
cycle washer. The 29-year-old now starts each day with a 45-minute cycle ride. He not
only feels healthier but he saves on his energy bills and does the washing too.
He said, "It gives the user a good workout. I've only used it for two weeks but I've already
noticed a difference." "I tend to get up at around six-thirty now and get straight on the cycle
washer. I keep it in the garden, so it's nice to get out in the fresh air. Afterwards, I feel full
of energy. Then I generally have breakfast and a shower and I really feel ready to start the
day." The green washing machine uses 25 litres of water a wash, and takes enough clothes
to fill a carrier bag. He normally cycles for 25 minutes to wash the clothes, and then for
another 20 minutes to dry them. And it doesn't use any electricity, of course. Mr Gadsden,

Câu 34 - 40
Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C, or D on your answer sheet to
indicate the correct answer to each of the questions from 34 to 40.
Los Angeles dancer, Brian Perez, was eating out with his friends one evening when
suddenly everyone went quiet. To his horror, he saw that the reason for this was that people
were checking their phones. Realising he had to do something to stop this, Brian made a
rather daring suggestion. What if they all put their gadgets in a pile in the middle of the
table until they had finished the meal? If anyone picked up their phone, that person would
have to pay the whole bill. And so, it is said, the game of 'phone stacking' was born.
The necessity for action like this highlights a major problem in today's society: our
inability to disconnect from technology. But while Brian's idea deals with the obsession in
a social context, measures also need to be taken at home. Some people drop their
smartphones into a box the moment they arrive home, which gives them the chance to
interact with the people they live with. The fact that the phone cannot be heard - it is on
silent - nor seen - the flashing lights are hidden by the box - means that they are no longer
tempted to use it.
A less drastic solution is to ban electronic devices at certain times of day when the whole
family is likely to be together, for example at meal times. This can be hard for everyone,
from teenagers desperate to text friends to parents unable to switch off from work. On a
normal day, however, dinner takes less than an hour, and the benefits of exchanging
opinions and anecdotes with the rest of the family certainly makes up for the time spent
offline.
Taking a break from technology is one thing, but knowing when to turn off a device is
another. Time seems to stand still in the virtual world, and before you know it, you find
that it is three o'clock in the morning. This is where a digital curfew comes in handy, a set
time when all devices must be put away. Evenings without technology are usually nice and
peaceful and make a more agreeable end to the day. And then it's time for bed. One of the
best ways of ensuring you can sleep at night is to ban electronic devices altogether from
the bedroom. Lying next to a machine bursting with information is far from relaxing, and
the sounds it emits during the night can easily wake you up. With technology out of the
room, a line has been drawn between daytime and sleep time, which enables us to switch
off ourselves and drift off to sleep.
34. Which best serves as the title for the passage?

One way of training for your future occupation in Germany is by pursuing a dual vocational
training programme. Such programmes offer plenty of opportunities for on-the-job training
and work experience. Programmes usually last between two and three and a half years and
comprise theoretical as well as practical elements. You will spend one or two days a week,
or several weeks at once, at a vocational school where you will acquire the theoretical
knowledge that you will need in your future occupation. The rest of the time will be spent
at a company. There you get to apply your newly acquired knowledge in practice, for
example by learning to operate machinery. You will get to know what your company does,
learn how it operates and find out if you can see yourself working there after completing
your training.
This combination of theory and practice gives you a real head start into your job: by the
time you have completed your training, you will not only have the required technical
knowledge, but you will also have hands-on experience in your job. There are around 350
officially recognized training programmes in Germany, so chances are good that one of
them will suit your interests and talents. You can find out which one that might be by
visiting one of the jobs vocational training fairs which are organised in many German cities
at different times in the year.
Employment prospects for students who have completed a dual vocational training
programme are very good. This is one of the reasons why this kind of training is very
popular with young Germans: around two thirds of all students leaving school go on to
start a vocational training programme.

Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C, or D to indicate the answer
to each of the questions.
Most parents want their sons and daughters to have equal chances of success when they
grow up. Today, equality of the sexes is largely mandated by public policy and law.
However, old-fashioned ideas and a lot of prejudice are still part of our culture and present
challenging questions for parents.

Gender stereotypes are rigid ideas about how boys and girls should behave. We all know
what these stereotypes are: A "feminine" girl should be insecure, accommodating and a
little illogical in her thinking. A "masculine" boy should be strong, unemotional,
aggressive, and competitive. How are children exposed to these stereotypes? According to
the researchers David and Myra Sadker of the American University of Washington, D.C.,
boys and girls are often treated differently in the classroom. They found out that when boys
speak, teachers usually offer constructive comments, when girls speech, teachers tend to
focus on the behavior. It's more important how the girls act rather than what they say.
The emphasis on differences begins at birth and continues throughout childhood. For
example, few people would give pink baby's clothes to a boy or a blue blanket to a girl.
Later, many of us give girls dolls and miniature kitchenware, while boys receive action
figures and construction sets. There's nothing wrong with that . The problem arises when
certain activities are deemed appropriate for one sex but not the other. According to
Heather J. Nicholson, Ph.D., director of the National Resource Center for Girls, Inc., this
kind of practice prevents boys and girls from acquiring important skills for their future
lives.
"The fact is," says Nicholson, "that society functions as a kind of sorting machine regarding
gender. In a recent survey, fifty-eight percent of eighth-grade girls but only six percent of
boys earned money caring for younger children. On the other hand, twenty-seven percent
of boys but only three percent of girls earned money doing lawn work". If we are serious
about educating a generation to be good workers and parents, we need to eliminate such
stereotypes as those mentioned previously.
Gender stereotypes inevitably are passed to our children. However, by becoming aware of
the messages our children receive, we can help them develop ways to overcome these
incorrect ideas. To counteract these ideas, parents can look for ways to challenge and
support their children, and to encourage confidence in ways that go beyond what society's
fixed ideas about differences of sext are.

Australians place a high value on independence and personal choice. This means that a
teacher or course tutor will not tell students what to do, but will give them a number of
options and suggest they work out which one is the best in their circumstances. It also
means that they are expected to take action if something goes wrong and seek out resources
and support for themselves.
Australians are also prepared to accept a range of opinions rather than believing there is
one truth. This means that in an educational setting, students will be expected to form their
own opinions and defend the reasons for that point of view and the evidence for it.
Australians are uncomfortable with differences in status and hence idealise the idea of
treating everyone equally. An illustration of this is that most adult Australians call each
other by their first names. This concern with equality means that Australians are
uncomfortable taking anything too seriously and are even ready to joke about themselves.
Australians believe that life should have a balance between work and leisure time. As a
consequence, some students may be critical of others who they perceive as doing nothing
but study. Australian notions of privacy mean that areas such as financial matters,
appearance and relationships are only discussed with close friends. While people may
volunteer such information, they may resent someone actually asking them unless the
friendship is firmly established. Even then, it is considered very impolite to ask someone
what they earn.

We are a planet of seven billion people, and this number is growing by about 370,000
people every day. This is putting a huge strain on the planet's natural resources. For many
governments and environmental organizations, the race is on to drastically reduce our
consumption of resources before they run out.
Water is one of our most precious resources. Our quality of life, as well as life itself,
depends on the availability of clean, fresh water. It is the most widely used resource in
industry, and plays a major role in energy production. Although 70 percent of the world is
covered in water, only 2.5 percent of that is fresh water, and less than one percent of that
freshwater is readily available to us. Yet we often overestimate how much water we have,
and reduce it further through pollution or inefficient use. Some 92 percent of all fresh water
used annually is dedicated to growing plants and raising animals for food. This means that
if water runs out, our food supply might follow. In India, it is estimated that future water
shortages could reduce grain harvests by 25%. In a country where the population exceeds
1.2 billion people and is growing rapidly every year, this is a huge concern. India, like
many developing countries, is already struggling to provide for its population. While most
people in developed countries can get water at the turn of a tap, nearly four billion people
elsewhere lack access to safe water, according to United Nations Development Report.
Rain forests are another endangered-resource. While rain forests are critically important to
humanity, they are rapidly being destroyed by human activities. The biggest cause of
deforestation is conversion of forest land for agriculture. Often called the "Lungs of the
Planet”, rain forests once covered 14 percent of the Earth's land surface, but this has shrunk
to only six percent. Every second, an area of rainforest, the size of a football field, is
destroyed at this rate. Rain forests will possibly disappear completely in less than 40 years.

The robot revolution isn't a thing of the future - robots are taking over right now and the
world of work is never to be the same again.
When having trouble swimming in the sea, you will be glad that Emily is there to rescue
you. Emily, not a lifeguard, is a remote-controlled robot that races through the water ten
times faster than any human swimmer. Despite not dragging you back to shore, she will
keep you afloat until a lifeboat picks you up. Elsewhere, the US Navy is working on
Octavia, a robot firefighter that never gives up. It battles through the smoke and flames
to extinguish fires that would be very dangerous for human firefighters.
Even the best surgeon's hand sometimes shakes while operating on a patient. Soon though,
patients will wake up after surgery knowing that the steadiest of robotic arms will have
been operating on them. Meanwhile, in another part of the hospital, a robot nurse, the RP7,
will be taking a patient's pulse and temperature then emailing their medical history to a
specialist in another country. In the corridor, a fleet of robots will be hard at work day and
night collecting dirty sheets, delivering clean ones and distributing food. These robots
won't replace humans, but they will allow the human staff to make progress in saving
people's lives.
A robot waiter shows you to your table, takes your order and heads for the kitchen where
the chef, another robot, cooks your steak. After a delicious main course, another robot
provides entertainment until the dessert comes. It may sound like a sci-fi film, but actually
this is the Haohai Robot Restaurant in China where all 18 members of staff are robots. The
customers don't need to give them a tip and they only work a five-hour shift before taking
a two-hour break to recharge their batteries.

THE PEOPLE BEHIND THE MUSIC
Think for a moment about the last music album you bought. Most likely, you'll think of the
singer or band that made you want to buy the album. You might even know the name of
the guitar player or the drummer. Those talented performers, however, are only some of
the people in the music industry work behind the scenes, but the roles they play in the
musical progress are very important.
Songwriters: Songs begin with the songwriter. Some songwriters work alone, but many
work in teams that combine the talents of a lyricist, who writes the words to songs, and an
instrumentalist, often a piano player or guitarist, who writes the music. Many of today's
pop stars work with songwriters. For example, some of Lady Gaga's biggest hits were
written by Nadir Khayat, also known "RedOne". Some songwriting teams have become
very famous, such as Mike Stock, Matt Aitken, and Pete Waterman, who were responsible
for many big 1980s pop hits.
Arrangers: After a song has been written, music arrangers-make it more appealing by
deciding which instruments will be used, what tempo, or speed, the song will have, and
whether the song should have a lower or higher pitch. A good arrangement can bring a
song to life and make it a classic.
Studio Musicians: Not every singer or instrumentalist can be a star, and many work in the
background as studio musicians. These artists are not a part of any one musical group.
Instead, they are hired for recording sessions that eventually become the albums you buy,
as well as soundtracks for television shows, movies, and radio ads.
Recording Engineers: Recording engineers also play a major role in creating the final
sound that you hear. First, these engineers set up the recording studio, the room where the
performers play, placing musicians and microphones in exactly the right places to get the
best sound. Next, they use electronic equipment, such multi-track recorders, to capture the
music. Finally long after the musicians have gone home, recording engineers use a mixing
board to balance the melodies and rhythms of each musician, and sometimes to incorporate
special sound effects or additional tracks.

of them work together to create the songs you love to listen to.

Many people dream of going on a great travel adventure. Most of us keep dreaming; others
make it happen...
Gregg Bleakney's dream was to travel the Americas from top to bottom. He got the idea
after he finished a 1,600 kilometer (1,000 mile) bike ride. Gregg's friend, Brooks Allen,
was also a cyclist. The two friends talked and slowly formed a plan they would travel from
Alaska to Argentina by bike. To pay for the trip, Gregg and Brooks worked and saved their
money for years. Once they were on the road, they often camped outdoors or stayed in
hostels. In many places, local people opened their homes to the two friends and gave them
food.
During their trip, Gregg and Brooks cycled through deserts, rainforests, and mountains.
They visited modern cities and ancient-ruins such as Machu Picchu in Peru. And
everywhere they went, they met other cyclists from all over the world. In May 2007-two
years, twelve countries, and over 30,500 km (19,000 mites) later-Gregg eventually reached
Ushuaia, Argentina, the southernmost city in the world. (Near Guatemala, Brooks had to
return to the U.S., and Gregg continued without him.)
The trip taught both men a lot about traveling, especially if you travel abroad. What did
they learn? Here is some of Gregg's advice:
Travel light. The less baggage you have, the less you'll worry about.
Be flexible. Don't plan everything. Then you'll be more relaxed and happy, especially if
there are problems.
Be polite.. As one traveller told Gregg, "Always remember that nobody wants to fight,
cheat, or rob a nice guy."
