Poetry

What is Poetry?

• Poetry is a type of literature that uses the sounds, rhythms, and meanings of
words to describe the world in striking imaginative ways.

A type of literature that expresses ideas, feelings, or tells a story in specific form.

Elements of poetry:

Lines and Stanzas


1. Poetry is divided into lines, or groups of words.
2. Lines are organized in units of meaning called stanzas.
The lines in a stanza work together to express one key idea.

Theme:
The theme of a poem is its central or main idea.

Rhythm and Meter


1. Rhythm – a beat, created by stressed and unstressed syllables in words
2. Meter – a pattern of rhythm

Syllables, and How Do You Count Them

A syllable is a beat of sound in a word.

The beat can sometimes be part of a word, or the whole word. For example
'window' has two beats ('win' – 'dow') but 'door' had just one ('door').

Breaking words down into their syllables can be really helpful when you are
learning spellings.

Example:

Watermelon (Wa-ter-mel-on = four syllables = four claps)

1. Simile – uses the word like or as to compare two seemingly unlike things

Poems Styles and Forms

Couplet poem
A couplet poem is a two line rhyming poem.

Couplet:
A stanza consisting of two lines that rhyme

Rhyme:
Words with similar sounds
Practice:
Complete the poem with words that have similar sounds.

My cat, she likes to chase a ………………,

Especially one that’s in the ……………….

Diamond Poem: is an unrhymed seven-line poem. The beginning and ending lines
are the shortest, while the lines in the middle are longer, giving diamante poems a
diamond shape

Example:

Acrostic Poem:
Acrostics are easy to write because they don’t need to rhyme, or form and you
don’t need to worry about the rhythm of the lines. Each line can be as long or as
short as you want it to be.
To create an acrostic, follow these five easy steps:
Decide what to write about.
Write your word down vertically.
Brainstorm words or phrases that describe your idea.
Place your brainstormed words or phrases on the lines that begin with the same
letters.

Fill in the rest of the lines to create a poem.

This can be done with any name

Haiku poem:

Haiku is an ancient, traditional Japanese form of structured poetry; they are often
inspired by an element of nature. It was written to capture a mood, a feeling or a
scene. Usually haiku has a total of 17 syllables arranged in three lines with a
pattern of five, seven and five syllables

Birds fly in the air


Birds can make nests in tall trees
Birds have nice big wings
Practice:

Concrete Poem (shape poem)

Concrete poetry, also known as visual poetry, is a type of poetry that uses the
arrangement of words, letters, colors, and typefaces to convey meaning. The visual
effect of the poem is often more important than the verbal significance.
