II. History
1. 1949-1955: Foreign Languages Department
Originally, the faculty was part of the Foreign Languages Department of the
Faculty of Letters, Saigon University.
2. 1955 - 1977: English Language Department
In 1955, it was developed into the English Language Department.
3. 1977-1996: English Language Faculty
After country liberation (1975) , the Faculty of Letters and Faculty of Sciences
of Saigon University were merged into Ho Chi Minh University in 1977, the
largest training center for basic science in the South of Vietnam. The
Department of English had remained part of the Foreign Languages Faculty
until 1990 when the Department of English was officially separated into a
department per se.
4. 1996 - now: Faculty of English Linguistics and Literature
Ho Chi Minh University is segregated into 2 institutions: University of Social
Science & Humanities (USSH) and the University of Sciences - 2 member
institutions of Vietnam National University - Ho Chi Minh city. The official
name of the Faculty of English Linguistics & Literature was also given then
and remains until today.

III. People
EF staff consists of 58 full-time teaching staff and 19 supporting staff. Among 58 full-
timers, there are 31 (8 PhD holders and 23 MA holders) currently teaching at
HCMUSSH, 8 currently studying abroad and about 70 visiting lecturers. In addition,
EF also has approximately 3500 enrollees per school year. EF Faculty includes four
departments: Department of English Language Skills (DELS), Department of
Translation and Interpreting (DETI), Department of American-British Culture and
Literature (DABCAL), Department of English Language Teaching (DELT).

The EF academic and administrative staff are committed to directing all
their teaching, research and service efforts to the achievement of what
has been stated in the faculty’s Vision, Missions and Core Values.

areas of English language teaching, translation and interpreting,

V. Others
The Faculty offers Bachelor Program and Post-graduate program.
Besides the academic training, the Faculty of English Linguistics and Literature
offers its students information on upcoming seminars, workshops and working
opportunities. The Faculty has built partnerships with numerous organizations
across the city. Many graduates from EF have found their current jobs thanks to
the job postings on the Faculty web site.
Additionally, learners are encouraged to do research, which is the main focus
as well as the most competitive aspect of the faculty. They have the chance to
share their knowledge, experience and research outputs at many programs
organized by the Faculty such as the International Conference on English
Language Teaching – ICELT in the field of English Language Teaching.
