Past simple + past simple

When we use the past simple more than once in a sentence, it usually indicates a consecutive
sequence of actions (i.e. that one action happened after another):
I closed the door and fastened my seatbelt. I turned the key in the ignition and the engine started.
When it started to rain, I opened my umbrella.
Past continuous + past simple
The verb in past continuous usually refers to a longer action, and the past simple verb
indicates a shorter and / or interrupting action:
I was having a shower when the phone rang.

Past continuous + past continuous

When we use the past continuous more than once in the same sentence, it usually describes two
longer and simultaneous actions in the past:

PAST SIMPLE: NEGATIVE AND INTERROGATIVE

To make the negative form of the past simple, we use a very similar structure to the negative
form of the present simple. Instead of "do / does", we use the auxiliary "did":

Subject Auxiliary Not Infinitive

I / you / he / she / it / they / we did not work

In written and spoken English (except in very formal situations or for special emphasis), it's
common to combine "did" and "not" to make the short form "didn't":
I didn't work yesterday.
To make the interrogative form, we put the auxiliary verb before the subject:

Auxiliary Subject Infinitive

did I / you / he / she / it / they / we work?

Did you work yesterday?

To avoid repetition, we often use short answers. These are formed with the subject and the
auxiliary "did" or "didn't":
