Steering pilot valve (1) is located inside the left operator's console and the valve is connected to the
bottom of dual twist steering tiller (2). Supply oil for the operation is provided by the steering charge
pump.

The pilot valve is controlled manually by the operator. The pilot valve controls the direction and the
displacement of the steering pump. Roller (3) on the dual twist tiller is positioned in the opening in lever
(4). When the tiller is moved to turn the tractor, roller (3) moves lever (4) on the pilot valve. The lever
depresses one of the plungers. When a plunger is depressed, pilot pressure is directed to the steering
pump control in order to upstroke the pump to the desired output. When the operator moves the tiller
further, the steering pump will upstroke more and the tractor will turn faster.

The pilot valve contains two pressure reducing valves that control the displacement of the steering
pump. One valve is for the STEER RIGHT condition. The other valve is for the STEER LEFT
condition. The pressure output from the pressure reducing valves is adjusted so that pump displacement
begins at 600 kPa (87 psi). The full displacement is achieved at 1800 kPa (261 psi).

NEUTRAL (No Steer) Position

When the tiller is in the NEUTRAL (No Steer) position, plunger (5) and plunger (6) are in the
centerposition. Pressure oil from the steering charge loop flows through supply passage (16) and the oil
is stopped by the position of stems (12) and (13). Passages (17) and (18) to the pump control valve are
open to drain passage (9) through holes (14) and (15). The steering pump remains in the destroked
condition.

STEER LEFT Position

When the operator moves the steering tiller to the STEER LEFT position, roller (3) moves lever (4) to
the right. Lever (4) pushes plunger (6) against the force of spring (8). Stem (13) moves down with the
plunger. Steering charge loop oil from passage (16) flows through holes (15) and through passage (18)
to the steering pump control. The oil begins to upstroke the steering pump. Return oil from the opposite
end of the steering pump control returns to the pilot valve through passage (17). The oil flows through
holes (14) to drain passage (9) .

The increased oil pressure in passage (18) pushes stem (13) against the force of springs (11). The flow
of pressure oil through holes (15) and passage (18) is stopped. The pressure is held in passage (18).
When the pressure in passage (18) begins to drop, springs (11) force stem (13) downward until the
correct pressure is reached in passage (18) .

Stem (13) modulates in order to maintain the required pressure to the pump control. The pump
swashplate angle is maintained in order to supply the proper amount of oil.

The control pressure to the pump is dependent on the amount of steering tiller movement. The control
pressure is higher when the tiller is moved further. The higher control pressure upstrokes the pump
further. The tractor turns faster when the control pressure is high.

When the operator releases the steering tiller, the tiller returns to the NEUTRAL (no steer) position.
Roller (3) moves lever (4) to the center position. Spring (8) pushes plunger (6) upward. The force on
springs (11) is relieved and the springs allow stem (13) to move upward. Pilot pressure in passage (18)
flows through holes (15). The pilot pressure then flows through passage (9) to the drain. With no
pressure to the pump control, the pump destrokes and the tractor is in a NEUTRAL (no steer) condition.

STEER RIGHT Position

The operation of the pilot valve for a STEER RIGHT condition is identical to the operation for a STEER
LEFT condition, except that the other pressure reducing valve is used.
