Read the following case study and answer question number 15 to 17.
Water shed management basically refers to efficient management and conservation
of surface and ground water resources. It involves prevention of runoff and storage and
recharge of groundwater through various methods like percolation tanks recharge wells etc.
However, in broad sense water management includes conservation, regeneration, and
judicious use of all resources- natural (like land, water, plants, and animals) and human with
in a water shed. Water shed management aims at bringing about balance between natural
resources on oner hand and society on the other. The success of water shed development
largely depends upon community participation.
The Central and the State Governments have initiated many water-shed development and
management programs in the country. Some of these are being implemented by non-
governmental organisations also. Haryali water shed development project sponsored by the
Central Government which aims at enabling the rural population to conserve water for
drinking, irrigation, fisheries, and afforestation. The project is being executed by Gram
Panchayat with people’s participation. Neeru-meeru program in (Andhra Pradesh) and
Arvary Pani Sansad (Alwar, Rajasthan) have taken up construction of various water-
harvesting structures such as percolation tanks, dug out ponds, check dams, etc. through
people’s participation.

18. Read the given passage carefully and answer the question that follow:
Indira Gandhi Canal, previously known as Rajasthan Canal, is one of the largest canal
systems in India. Conceived by Kanwar Sain in 1948, the canal project was launched on 31 st
March 1958. The canal originates at Harikebar rage in Punjab and runs parallel to Pakistan
border at an average distance of 40km in Thar desert of Rajasthan. The total plant length of
the system is 9060km catering to the irrigation needs of a total culturable command area of
19.63lakhs hectare. Out of the total command area, about 70% was envisaged to be
irrigated by flow system and the rest by lift system. The construction work of canal has been
carried out through two stages. The command area of stage one lies in Gandhinagar,
Hanumangarh and Northern part of Bikaner districts. It has a gently undulating topography
and its culturable command area is 5.53 lakhs hectare. The command area of stage two is
spread over Bikaner, Jaisalmer, Balmer, Jodhpur, Nagaur and Churu districts covering
culturable command area of 14.10 lakh hectare. It comprises desert land dotted with
shifting, sand dunes and temperature soaring to 50 degrees Celsius in summers. In the lift
canal, the water is lifted to make it to flow against the slope of the land. All the lift canals of
