Linear Equations and Its Interpretative Applications

The slope-intercept form:
1. Suppose the Fixed cost (setup cost) for producing product X be br. 2000. After setup it costs br. 10 per
X unit of products. If the total cost is represented by Y:
a. Write the equation of this relationship in slope-intercept form.
b. State the slope of the line
c. State the Y-intercept of the line
2. A salesman has a fixed salary of br. 200 a week. In addition, he receives a sales commission that is
30% of his total volume of sales. State the relationship between the sales man’s total weekly salary &
his sales for the week.
3. A company sells handmade candles. The fixed cost to start the business (overhead, materials, etc.) is
$200. Each candle is sold for $15. Determine the Total revenue equation.
4. A software company offers a subscription service. The company has a monthly fixed cost of $500 for
hosting and maintenance. Each subscription is priced at $25 per month. Determine the total revenue
RRR as a function of the number of subscriptions sold xxx.
5. A toy manufacturer incurs a fixed cost of $1,000 for setting up the production line. Each toy produced
costs an additional $20 in materials and labor. Write the equation representing the total cost CCC as a
function of the number of toys produced xxx.
6. A coffee shop sells coffee at $4 per cup. The shop has a fixed monthly cost of $800 for rent and
utilities. Write an equation for the total revenue RRR based on the number of cups of coffee sold xxx.
7. A clothing retailer sells shirts for $25 each. The fixed costs for the store are $1,500 per month, and the
cost to produce each shirt is $10. Write an equation for the profit PPP as a function of the number of
shirts sold xxx.
Slope and Point form
1. If the relationship between Total Cost and the number of units made is linear, & if costs increases by
br. 7.00 for each additional unit made, and if the Total Cost of 10 units is br. 180.00. Find the equation
of the relationship between Total Cost (Y) & number of units made (X)
2. A salesman earns a weekly basic salary plus a sales commission of 20% of his total weekly sales.
When his total weekly sales total Birr 1000, his total salary for the week is Birr 400. Derive the formula
describing the relationship between total salary and sales
3. A bakery produces cakes at a variable cost of $15 each. If the bakery has a cost of $600 when
producing 20 cakes, write the cost equation in point-slope form.
4. A car dealership sold 15 cars in January, generating $300,000 in sales. They anticipate that for each
additional car sold, their sales will increase by $20,000. Write the equation in point-slope form for sales
SSS based on the number of cars sold ccc.
5. A marketing firm has a budget of $10,000 for advertising in its first year, and it plans to increase the
budget by $2,000 each year. Write the equation in point-slope form for the advertising budget BBB as a
function of the number of years yyy

Two Point form

1. It costs a company Br. 400 to produce 20 units of a product and 30 units are produced for br. 500,
assuming a linear relation between total cost and number of units of a product produced, assuming a
linear relationship between total costs and number of units produced, formulate a linear equation which
relates total costs with number of units produced
2. A salesman has a base salary and, in addition, receives a commission, which is a fixed percentage of
his sales volume. When his weekly sales are Birr 1000, his total salary is Birr 400. When his weekly
sales are Birr 500, his total salary is Birr 300. Determine his base salary and his commission
percentage and express the relationship between sales
and salary in equation form
3. It costs Birr 1,400 for printing 100 copies of a report and Birr 3000 for printing 500
copies. Assuming a linear relationship what would be the price for printing 300 copies
