Widgit Symbols © Widgit Software 2002-2022

A long time ago there lived a Prince called Rama.
He married a princess called Sita.
Rama's father was becoming very old.
He told Rama he wanted him to become King.

1
The Queen did not like this idea.
She wanted Rama's brother to be King.
His name was Prince Bharat.
The Queen asked the King to send Rama away.

2
The King sent Rama away for 14 years.
His brother Prince Lakshman went too.
Rama, Sita and Lakshman lived in the forest.
They lived there for a very long time.

3
I don't want to I will fetch
be king! Rama back!

Sadly, after a while the old King died.

The Queen told her other son Prince Bharat, he could be the new King.
But he did not want to be King.
He said he would fetch Rama back to be the new King.

4
Will you return
to be King?
Not yet!

Prince Bharat found Rama and asked him to be the new King.
But Rama said he would not be King just yet.
He had promised his father he would stay away for 14 years.
He did not want to break his promise.

5
Prince Bharat took Rama's golden sandals back to the palace.
He placed them on the throne.
This was to remind everyone that Rama would return.
One day Rama would be the rightful King.

6
Back in the forest a nasty demon was watching Sita.
The demon was called Ravana.
When Rama and Lakshman went hunting, Ravana captured Sita.
He took her away to his castle on an island.

7
Ravana wanted to marry Sita but she said "NO!!"
He kept her prisoner for a long time.
While Rama searched for Sita he met a friend called Hanuman.
He was King of the monkeys.

8
Hanuman told Rama where Sita was being kept prisoner.
Rama and his friends set off to fight Ravana and save Sita.
There was a huge battle and Ravana was killed.
Rama saved Sita and they lived happily together again at last.

9
It was time for Rama to return to the palace to become the new King.
Everyone put little lights outside their houses to show them the way.
These lights were called divas.
Every year Hindu and Sikh people have these little lights in their houses.
It reminds them of the story of Rama and Sita.
