ABSTRACT
This report is the result of an internship of one year from January 2022 end November 2024 by
making observation of all activities performed there in SHABAH LAND COMPANY LTD ,
making some practices in different operations on different kind of technique of Measurement and
I asking questions about what I don’t understand, SHABAH LAND COMPANY LTD is a private
company. I acquired knowledge in the measurement especially the project’s boundaries setting out
and demarcation, plots tracking, deed plan processing, land subdivision, conflict resolution, and
topographic surveying in MUSANZE district.

Project of measurement on different sites in MUSANZE district. During the internship it was
required to have a sense of observation in the works. Every measurement of new boundaries was
setting out, demarcation and plots tracking, land subdivision using specific instrument such as
FOIF GPS RECEIVER, N90025904016.

CHAPTER 1: BACKGROUND OF THE ORGANIZATION
1.1 INTRODUCTION

The internship has started on January 2022 and has ended on november 2024, as intern who is
technicians where our all activities will be made on the fieldand after data analysis in the office;
we must have many practical skills in order to become professional in our domains of Surveying
at the end of our studies.

The interns have to obtain internship opportunity in different institution that related to their
domains to learn and resolve the problems that related to their academic domains.

My internship has focused on the measurement especially the project’s boundaries setting out and
demarcation, plots tracking, deed plan processing, land subdivision, conflict resolution, and
topographic surveying in Musanze district. The primary function of the Cadastral System in
Rwanda is to define (delineate and document) ownership rights. Accurate delineation of the
ownership rights will enable the development of a Cadastral Information System, which forms the
basis for; land valuation, land taxation, development planning, local authority demarcation and
land administration. The objectives of cadastral surveying are summarized below:

 To locate boundaries of a land parcel or portion of a building, and additional

ownership and descriptive details depicted on a survey plan.
 To determine the extent (size), value (location and land use), ownership.
 To make out design plans on the use of available land.
 To ease administration in such a way that:
 It enables proper allocation of land to citizens or cooperate bodies
for development
 It enables government collect taxes (tenant rates) from land owner’s
developers)
 It enables government control or guide land development; that land
is put into practical and profitable uses.

During our survey camp we have also carried out a topographic surveying that was consisting of
identifying and mapping the contours of the ground and existing features on the surface of the
earth and slightly above or below the earth's surface (i.e. trees, buildings, streets, walkways, etc.

1.2 DESCRIPTION OF THE ORGANIZATION

 DESCRIPTION OF SHABAH LAND COMPANY LTD

1.2.1 Definition
My internship was carried out in SHABAH LAND COMPANY on the Field of different sites as
a land Surveyor’s technician.

SHABAH LAND COMPANY is company which is private institution with financial autonomy
for establishing its mission, structure and functioning and its office located in MUSANZE District.

1.2.2 Objectives of activities undertaken

Internship was a prestigious moment of participating in and carrying out different measurement
Survey on field, extending my ability and gaining further practical skills mainly in the field of
Measure. During the whole period of internship, I mainly worked as land surveyor
Technician where I was dealing with field activities in the project’s boundaries setting out and
demarcation, plots tracking, deed plan processing, land subdivision, conflict resolution, and
topographic surveying in projects including RUBAVU district.

1.2.3 Types of Equipments instruments used during an internship and their uses

The following table shows what we have planned for the internship for practical
session Instrument and Tasks
materials to use
Topographic Total station and  GPS will be used to takes some points that
survey and Covadis software delimitate our site area.
plotting of a  Some contours will be highlighted and a topo
topo map map will be produced
Cadastral GPS and Arc GIS  Some coordinate of a chosen plot will be
surveying, software will be needed recorded and a subdivision will be conducted

and plotting  We will have to produce cadastral plans.

1.1.1.1 2.1.3.1. TOPOGRAPHIC SURVEYING

During our interns we have also carried out a topographic surveying that was consisting of
identifying and mapping the contours of the ground and existing features on the surface of
the earth and slightly above or below the earth's surface (i.e. trees, buildings, streets,
walkways, etc.
Note: we have used 2 types of Dumpy level and 1 types of total station
 Automatic dumpy level
 Digital dumpy level
 Leica TS 1205 has provided us with data in GSI format

Methodology that has been used during topographic surveying

It was about taking necessary points judged essential for our topographic surveying; firstly
we were supposed to orient our total station on known points in order to start recording
coordinates. As we have used two different total stations the one has provided us with data
in GSI format and builder has provided us with data in text file format. The data have been
processed in Covadis.
 Result
We have produced a topographic map of our surveyed area

1.1.1.2 CADASTRAL SURVEYING

It is a branch of surveying dealing with the survey and demarcation of land for the purpose
of defining land parcels and registering them in a land registry.
Apparatus used
 Methodology
We have conducted a cadastral surveying where after making an orientation of the GPS we
have recorded points of the plot. After the collection of data, there have been processed in
Arc GIS to produce a cadastral plan
 Result
 SUBDIVISION
After producing a cadastral plan we have subdivided it into 2 plots and we have made them
access to the road through tracing among them a new road
Engineering surveying
Engineering surveying as those activities involved in the planning and execution of surveys for the planning,
design, construction, operation, and maintenance of engineered projects.
Land surveying
Land surveying is the art and science of establishing or reestablishing corners, lines, boundaries, and
monuments of real property (land) based upon recorded documents, historical evidence, and present standards
of practice. Surveying is important in development. By accurately mapping the land, surveyors can identify its
natural features and provide recommendations on how to best use the land while minimizing environmental
impacts.
Cadastral survey
It is a branch of surveying dealing with the survey and demarcation of land for the purpose of defining land
parcels and registering them in a land registry. This survey determines the ownership, boundaries and location
of land parcels. It allows determining boundaries of individual land (public or private), but also national and
international boundaries

Chapter 3: Learning outcome

To determine the relative position of any object or point of the earth. To define control points and boundary of
area, for example a cadastral survey. Measure of land features, such as depth and shape based o reference
points. Drawing boundaries accurately between private and public land to inspecting and other critical
infrastructure. To determine the required area and volumes of land and material needed during construction.
Chapter 4: self-evaluation of internship
Internship were provided invaluable learning experience through practical applications, increasing the employability for me
encourage self-development and showing potential career in surveying. To identify any potential challenge or limitation that could
impact the projects. Help established planning and design and provides data that can be used to determine the best course of action.
Help me testing the practical aspects of what you can know and focus on how to do particular my task.
Chapter 5: Self-development plan
To keep working hard oriented on high income and to determine high quality services, continue develop
surveying career from one level to another. I will still working under rule and regulations of Rwanda
Organization of Land Surveyors.
CHAPTER 6: CONCLUSION

Reference to the knowledge gained in this internship, technical practice that were undertaken on
the field, help us to understand deeply what we were leant in the class theoretically .it enabled us
to have self-confidence and to know other problems which we faced on the field and find out quick
and sustainable Solutions.

CHAPTER 6: RECOMMENDATIONS

We thank our Rwanda organization of land surveyors (Rols) specifically for having introduced
such good idea of internship. and we do recommend that in order to equip surveyor in SHABAH
LAND COMPANY LTD with necessary practical and image processing knowledge; it will be
better if at the end of each level student would get an opportunity to do internship in order to be
familiar for what surveying is mainly consisting through using currently the mains machines and
software used in land surveying field.
