1. The mean bucket speed of a Pelton turbine is 14 m/s. The flow rate of water supplied
by the jet under a head of 45m is 800 lps. If the jet is deflected by the bucket at an angle
of 165°, find the kW power and the efficiency of the turbine. [Ans. P=346kW,
ηhyd=98%]
2. A pelton wheel develops 8000kW under a net head of 125m at a speed of 200rpm.
Assuming the co-efficient of velocity for the nozzle is 0.98, hydraulic efficiency 85%,
speed ratio 0.46 and jet diameter to wheel diameter ration 1/8, determine: i) the
discharge required, ii) the diameter of the wheel, iii)the diameter and number of jets
required, and iv) the specific speed, mechanical efficiency is 76%. [ Ans.
Q=10.09m3/sec, D=2.2m, dj=0.27m, n=4jets and Ns=42.8]
3. Water enters an inward flow turbine at an angle of 22° to the tangent to the outer rim
and leaves the turbine radially. The speed of the wheel is 300rpm and the velocity of
flow is constant at 3m/s. Find the necessary angle of the blades when the inner and
outer diameter of the turbine are 30cm and 60cm respectively. If the width of the wheel
at inlet is 15cm, calculate the kW power developed. Thickness of the blade may be
neglected. [β1=123.6°, β2=32.5° P=59kW]
4. The following data is for a Francis turbine. Net head=58m, speed=700rpm, shaft
power=400hp, overall efficiency=0.82, hydraulic efficiency=0.92, flow ratio=0.2,
breadth to diameter ration at inlet=0.1, outer diameter of the runner is 2times the inner
diameter. The discharge is radial with a velocity of flow to be constant. The thickness
of vane occupies 5% of circumferential area of the runner. Determine i) guide vane
angle ii) runner vane angle at inlet and outlet. [ Ans. α1=14.9°, β1=56.9° β2=33°]
5. A Kaplan turbine operating under a net head of 20m, develops 36775kW power with
an overall efficiency of 86%. The speed ratio is 2 and flow ratio is 0.6. The hub diameter
of the wheel is 0.35 times the outside of the wheel. Find the diameter and speed of the
turbine. [Ans. D=5.2m, d=1.8m, N=147rpm]
6. A Kaplan turbine works under a head of 10m. The hub diameter is 1/3 rd of the diameter
of the runner. The turbine runs at 120rpm. The vane angle at the outlet of the extreme
edge of the runner is 15°. If the flow ratio is 0.65, find a) diameter of the runner and
hub, b)discharge through the runner, The discharge at the outlet is radial. . [Ans.
D=5.4m, d=1.8m, Q=185.2m3/sec]

7. A centrifugal pump has the following dimensions Inlet radius= 80mm, outlet
radius=160mm, Width of the inlet=50mm, width of the outlet=50mm, Blade angle at
inlet=0.45 radians, Blade angle at outlet=0.25radians, Assume shockless entry,
determine the discharge and head developed by the pump when the impeller rotates
at 90 rad/sec.

8. The outer diameter of an impeller of a centrifugal pump is 40 cm and outlet width 5

cm. The pump is running at 800 rpm and is working against a total head of 15 m. The
vanes angle at the outlet is 40° and the manometric efficiency is 75%. Determine
Velocity of flow at outlet Velocity of water leaving the vane Angle made by the
absolute velocity at outlet with the direction of motion at outlet Discharge and Work
done by the impeller per kg of water
Ans(a. 4.3 m/s, b. 12.45m/s, c. 20 degree, d. 0.27 m3/sec. e. 196.2 J)

vane pump.
10. Explain the performance characteristic curve for turbine and pump.
