Critical Thinking
Quarter 2 - Module 6
The Neural and Social Networks
Target

Welcome to Module 6, in this module, you are going to learn about neural
networks, social networks and establishing linkage between self and the social
networks.
You have learned already in your previous lesson the difference between
connections, relationships, and networks. Wherein network is defined as a group of
individuals who collaborates with each other to be able to achieve a common purpose
and connection. (Dictionary.com) The word network composed of two words: net and
work, which coined to mean “working like a net” which means a combination of lines
that work as one. (Basas)
Every individual is part of global networked society. Through the use of
technology, humans can easily connect to each other in the different corner of the
world. Everything was created in this world to serve their own purpose and
obligation. How about you, how much do you know about the reason of your
existence? What will be your role or function in this world or in the society where you
live in? Why do you need to connect with others or to be belong to social networks?
This learning material is composed of two lessons:
Lesson 1: Compare Neural Networks with Social Networks
Lesson 2: Linkage Between Self and the Social Network
After going through this module, you are expected to attain the following
objectives:
Learning Competencies
• Compare the neural networks with social networks HUMSS_MCT12-IIg-i-3
• Establish linkage between self and the social network one belongs to
HUMSS_MCT12-IIg-i-4
Sub-tasks:
1. define neural networks and social networks
2. explain the importance of neural networks and social networks
3. identify various social networking sites
4. enumerate the advantages and disadvantages of social networks
5. explain how to establish linkage between self and the social network one
belongs

Lesson 1: NEURAL NETWORKS and SOCIAL NETWORKS

A social network is defined as a group of social interactions and personal

relationships or a dedicated website or other application which enables users to
communicate with each other by posting information, comments, messages, images,
etc. (Oxford Languages) while neural network is a computer architecture in which a
number of processors are interconnected in a manner suggestive of the connections
between neurons in a human brain and which is able to learn by a process of trial
and error. (Merriam Webster Dictionary). Neural networks are also ideally suited to
help people solve complex problems in real-life situations. The social network is made
up of humans, while neural network is made up of neurons, but in both networks,
individual entities mutually influence each other as participants in a group. Each
part has a function and contributes to the whole network. The human brain is
composed of neurons, which spreads messages from one nerve cell to another and
set together to form a network of nerves. The brain regulates the whole system of the
body, each part has its own function, but one part cannot function effectively without
the other.

The functions of the human brain can be compared to the society. The society
is made up of different social groups and various types of people with different
attitudes, characters, and functions. Each group and individual want to function
well, live happily, peacefully, successfully, and to be belong to a group within the
society. To achieve these, each group, and the individual need to interact and connect
with each other and most especially they need to do their part and function within
the society. Failure to do so will lead to misunderstanding, conflict, and serious
problems which may result to the failure of an individual, organization, or group.
There should be linkages, collaboration, and participation, as the saying goes, “No
Man is an Island”, which means we cannot live alone; we all need other people, most
especially our family and friends.

Social networks may include social institutions that focused on meeting our
social needs like schools that serve as foundation for knowledge and skills, church
for spiritual guidance, family for procreation, economy for products and services,
media for information and entertainment, and government to protect us from our
rights. Nowadays, people are attached, active, and living with social networking
platforms and apps like Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, Youtube and others which
became their common daily activity.

If our brain regulates body functions, social groups or networks are also
regulated by laws to protect the rights of every member and to maintain peace and
to avoid conflicts.
Lesson 2: Establishing Linkages between Self and the Social Network

The demands of the digital society due to the enormous development of

technology in the 21st century, brings humanity to embrace the online world. Today,
life has been shaped by the beeps of social networking sites. People have found ways
to be connected, updated and socially active on the internet which became possible
with the advent of the numerous social networking platforms and apps like the
following:

Facebook
• The largest and one of the most widely used social networking sites in the
world. The first that surpassed the landmark of one (1) billion user
accounts.

WhatsApp
• It is an instant messaging platform exists as an independent entity which
captures the imagination of millions of people by having the ability to
communicate and share instantly with individuals and groups.

Instagram
• It was launched as a unique social networking platform that was
completely based on sharing photos and videos. Thus, this enables us to
capture the best moments of our life. Allows us to apply multiple filters to
photos and easily post them to other popular networking sites.

Twitter
• It enables us to post short text messages (called tweets), containing a
limited number of characters (up to 280) to convey our message to the
world.

YouTube
• The world largest video-sharing social networking site that enables users
to upload and share videos, view, comment and like.

These are only some of the popular social networking sites that became part
of our daily life. The popularity of social networking sites continues to grow, so does
the number of users. The popularity is due to the ability of meeting the needs and
interests of a vast majority of people. Social networks usually use as a way of
socialization, like meeting other people, sharing latest events, photos and videos to
our friends and liking and giving comments to their post. For others, they used social
platforms as a valuable tool for business and information dissemination.
Establishing connection between oneself and social network help us to be
updated and connected to our family, friends, and other people around the world
especially in this time of pandemic wherein we are living in a new normal and there
were so many restrictions. On the other side, we must be vigilant to some of the
disadvantages of social networks, and to avoid this, we should remember the
following when joining or establishing linkage to social networks.

Social Networking Safety Tips:

1. Do not share personal details or be cautious in sharing personal
information like the date and place of birth, address, and phone number.
2. Adjust primary settings in your phone/computer or in your account so
that you can control the information that you will be sharing.
3. Limit details about work history. Do not give all the information about
your past work and employer.
4. Verify who is connecting with you. Limit your friends
5. Keep control of comments

The following are some of the Advantages and Disadvantages of using Social
Networking:

Advantages Disadvantages
1. Possibility of unlimited 1. Lot of information
communication with other 2. Bullying, cyberbullying and
users social pressure
2. New acquaintances/friends 3. Distraction from
3. Simple and easy way of business/work/
communication 4. Health problems
4. Easy access to news and 5. Confidentiality risks
important information
5. More opportunities for doing
and developing business

Social networks may help us a lot, but we cannot deny the fact that there are
also some disadvantages of using it. Although everyone has the right to establish
linkage to social networks, each one must be responsible and set limitations in using
it. We should use it wisely, responsibly and intelligently. Social networks are not for
self-validation (the feeling of having recognized, confirmed, or established one’s self
own worthiness or legitimacy -Webster) through the reactions from other people. We
must know our worth and established our self-esteem. Knowing what is real and
expected will help us to uplift our self whatever comments or reactions that we will
be receiving in social media or networks we belong.

The use of social networks by anybody whatever stage of life they belong
must be governed by the Cybercrime Prevention Act of 2012 or the Republic
Act.No.10175.
