Malaysia and the Organization of Islamic Countries By : Teo Kai Sheng Shobha a/p Rajantiran Yee Sze Teng Makdalina Wati @ Siti Nadzirah binti Makbull

Malaysian leaders have always endeavored, to enhance and establish the glory of Islam, since the first prime minister , Tunku Abdul Rahman. It was decided at the Conference of Islamic Foreign Ministers in Jeddah, in March, 1970 to form OIC. The Organisation of Islamic Countries(OIC), was set up in May 1971. It was also known as the Islamic Commonwealtth.

Objective of OIC
Forge closer unity and cooperation among member countries economically , culturally, and in the filed of science. Firm up cooperative efforts to protect honor , independence and national rights. Solve the problems of dispute involving Islamic nations.

Strategy Of OIC

Financing education,welfare, publication and sports. Financing construction of buildings and establishing fellowship.

Cooperation in preparing and sending doctors and voluntary medical workers.

Give financial aid to countries which are facing hardship, eg : Nigeria, Chad and Gambia, Mali.

Programme of OIC

International Islamic University of Malaya Islamic University of NIGERIA

Islamic Unity Fund set up after the Islamic Summit Conference(1974)

Studies of the History of Islamic Civilization of the Arabic language.

The United Nations Organization

This organization was created to bring unity and stability through consultation and discussion that is concordant with the constitutional principles of Malaysia. Malaysia supports the philosophy, objective, and programme of the United Nations.

Objective Of UN

Create a common peace with member countries. Improve the quality of life of member countries.

Protect and improve the people's standard of health in member countries.

Help backward countries in the areas of diet and education.

Programme Of UN

Emergency aid to help war victims , especially children and woman.

International Red Cross Organization

General Assembly

Security to determine and decide on security issue through the power to veto.

United Nation Economic and Social Council to improve the quality of life.

Strategy Of UN

Solve any World issue or disagreement

Organize United Nations programmes through agencies like World Health Organization (WHO), United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF),United Nations Development programme (UNDP)

Example: settlements for refugees , set up shelter and to obtain food and medicine. Help Vietnamese and Cambodian refugees and set up the temporary settlements

Cooperation through the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organisation.

UNESCO's headquarters in Paris was set up on November 4th . 1946. Today, its membership stands at 161 countries

The activities focused on the continent of Africa and Latin America since the needs and demands of the inhabitants due to poverty and backwardness.

Objective of UNESCO

Develop knowledge particularly in the science field.

Have close cooperation to eliminate illiteracy.

Improve the level of cooperation in education and culture to create world unity and welfare.

Programme of UNESCO

International seminars and conference .

Publication of Courier using various language.

Financial aid amounting to US 49.8 million from United States to UNESCO between 1981-1983.

Strategy of UNESCO

Overcome the socio-economic problems of member nations.

Focus on development in Africa.

Broaden the definition of World Heritage to better reflect the full spectrum of our worlds cultural and natural treasures

Provide a comprehensive framework and operational methodology for implementing the World Heritage Convention.
