IT Capstone Project
 A capstone project is a final academic task that
students need to complete at the end of their IT
program.
 It allows them to use what they have learned to
solve a real-world problem or complete a significant
project. This can involve research, creating
something new, or improving existing processes.
 Capstone projects help show that students are
ready to apply their knowledge in a professional
setting.

Thesis Vs Capstone Project
What is a thesis?
A thesis is an academic document presenting a student's original
research, typically required for completing a degree. It outlines
the research question, methodology, findings, and conclusions
(Turubian, 2018). This is done to understand the world.
What is a capstone project?
Capstone project is an undertaking appropriate to a professional
field. It should significantly address an existing problem or need.
IT capstone project focuses on the infrastructure, application, or
processes involved in implementing computing solution to a
problem (CHED. 2015, Annex A).

Research Vs Capstone Project Design
According to Ashley Karr (2013), research and design are distinct but
often complementary activities.

Research Vs Capstone Project…
Based of Hauhart & Grahe (2015) comparison:
• Research projects tend to focus on developing new
knowledge or contributing to the academic field, often
using methods such as experiments, surveys, or data
analysis. The goal is to answer a research question or test
a hypothesis.
• Capstone projects are more focused on applying
knowledge and skills to solve practical problems. They
often emphasize real-world applications and may involve
collaboration with industry or community partners.

Current Perspective of Research Vs Design
Recent literature emphasizes that while research and design are
distinct, they often work in tandem, especially in fields like
human-centered design and user experience (UX) design.
• Current approaches, such as Design Thinking, integrate both
research and design as iterative processes.
In this model:
• Research is important for understanding the context, users,
and problems.
• Design builds on research findings to create solutions, which
are then tested and refined based on further research or user
feedback.

How do I begin the Capstone Project?
1. Topic Identification
 Ideally, the first step is to identify the capstone
project TOPIC first.
 Without a topic, your efforts may be unfocused,
which will lead to unnecessary data collection.
 For example, if your capstone project topic is about
improving an inventory management system, your
efforts will be directed at knowing the current
system’s operation.

2. Problem or Need Identification
 There are two suggested ways to identify the problem or need
of the current system, these are process observation and
through interview with stakeholders.
 First, conduct a process observation that focuses on the
workflow, inefficiencies, bottlenecks, ‘pain points’, or potential
challenges.
 For example, for inventory management system, observation
can focus on processes like tracking stock, ordering, and
inventory auditing, than observing general office procedures.
 Then, analyze the results of the observations and develop
interview questions aimed at digging deeper for the
problematic process or area.

3. Conduct Literature Review
 The purpose of conducting a literature review is to
understand existing solutions, common problems, and
trends in your chosen topic of interest.
 Review articles, academic papers, industry reports, and
case studies related to your chosen topic. Take note of the
details of these sources for citation and reference entry.
 For example, in the case of an inventory management
system, you can focus your review on inventory
management concepts and strategies and the software
used (e.g., barcodes, RFID), among others.

How to Conduct Process Observation?
1. Define the objective of the process observation
• Determine what your are observing – whether it’s a workflow, a
user interacting with a system, or the flow of information
through a process. Your observation should align with your
capstone project’s focus.
2. Create an Observation Checklist. Make a list of the key areas you
need to observe. This could include:
• Workflow steps
• Communication between team members
• Use of tools, software, or devices
• Time taken for specific tasks
• Points where the process stalls or becomes inefficient

How to Conduct Process Observation…
3. Take Notes. As you observe, take detailed notes on each step of
the process. Pay attention to interactions between users and
systems, manual tasks, and any issues that arise during the
workflow.
• For example, if employees have to manually input data in
multiple systems, note the time it takes and potential errors
that might occur.
4. Focus on Pain Points. Look for signs of frustration, delays,
repeated steps, or anything that seems to slow down the process
or reduce its effectiveness.
• For example, if employees have to constantly switch between
multiple systems or applications, this could indicate a problem
worth addressing in your project.
