1 Introduction
This manual focus on the frequency calibration of the stirring unit. Please keep the values
for the Stir Amplitude and the Beat Amplitude within the common values (see chapter
2.2)

The stirring unit must swing at a fixed frequency to provide the best results for the freezing
point analysis. This correct resonance frequency is already set up during the manufacturing
process. But due to the ageing of the material (spring steel sheet and so on) this resonance
frequency can shift within the first months of operation. The necessary steps to calibrate the
stir unit are covered by the chapter 2.

2 Calibration of the Stirring Unit

2.1 Short reference
A short reference to configure the stirring unit of the CryoStar I. A detailed description of
the single steps follows.

Step Description
1 Change frequency value at 110Hz and activate the stirrer
Change the point of view by 90◦ and increase the frequency
2
until the biggest amplitude
3 Add 2.4Hz on top of the frequency

2.2 Get ready

The device must be switched on and the menu for the stirring unit must be selected. The
stirring unit menu can be found under Setup and stirrer. There are three parameters which
affect the stirring unit.

Data Set Common Values

Stir Amplitude 35 - 50
Beat Amplitude 80 - 90
Frequency 120 - 140

The stirring amplitude is responsible to adjust the swing distance (amplitude) of the stirrer
during the stir process.
The beat amplitude is responsible to adjust the swing distance (amplitude) during the beat
process (once the beat temperature, normally at −3◦ C, is reached).
Both values are affected by the frequency. Therefore this value must be correct, or the entire
system behaviour is affected in a negative way.
The frequency parameter controls the frequency of the stirring unit. Every mechanic system
in movement has a so called resonance frequency, where the swing amplitude is at its
maximum.

2.3 Step 1
Choose a frequency value far below the expected resonance frequency (the common values
for the resonance frequency is somewhere between 120 and 140Hz), therefore enter a value
somewhere at 110Hz. To enter the value via an input field, hit the number for the frequency
value. An input field will pop up.
Activate the stirrer via the stirrer on/off button (you should notice a buzzing sound).

2
2.4 Step 2

Figure 3: Front view of the stirring unit

2.4 Step 2
During the next step it is important to change the point of view. (Usually the user is right
in front of the device.) Change the point of view by 90◦ , either to the left or the right. The
stirrer must swing from left to right, not from front to back (illustrated in picture 4).

2 Calibration of the Stirring Unit

Figure 4: Swing distance of the stirring unit below the resonance frequency

Now increase the frequency with the arrow up button and inspect the amplitude of the stirrer
(you can keep pushing the button). As closer the frequency gets to the resonance frequency,
the amplitude (swing distance) gets bigger and bigger. If the point with the highest amplitude
has been found (so called resonance frequency), stop to increase the frequency (illustrated in
picture 5).

4
2.5 Step 3

Figure 5: Swing distance of the stirring unit at the resonance frequency

The swing distance at the tip of the stirrer should be about 3 till 4 mm wide.

Hint: The amplitude begins to decrease if the frequency overshoots the resonance frequency.
If this is the case decrease the frequency value until the maximum amplitude has been found.

2.5 Step 3
The frequency value with the biggest amplitude is the resonance frequency. Once this
value has been found, a last step must be done. The frequency value must be increased
by 2.4Hz (The fluid of the sample will slow down the stirrer, therefore a slightly increased
frequency must be chosen).

3 Additional Notes
3.1 Stir and Beat Amplitude
The described process to calibrate the stirring unit is independent of the settings of the stir
and beat amplitude. To achieve fast and good results for the calibration it is recommended
to set this values according to chapter 2.2. Later on, during the regular operation of the
CryoStar, it is important to adapted the stir and beat amplitude to avoid broken glass (the
stirrer breaks the glass tubes) and incorrect cool down process of the sample (too much/less
stirring).

3 Additional Notes

3.2 Glass tube handling

The glass tubes dip into the cooling bath and some cooling liquid remains on the outer side.
It is important that the water/milk sample does not get into contact with this cooling liquid.
The freezing point of the cooling liquid has been lowered by a chemical compound. A small
drop of this cooling liquid inside the sample contaminates the actual and the next 4 till 5
samples. Therefore it is important to avoid any contact of the sample with the cooling liquid.
