Plant and Animal Cell
LO:
• To describe and compare the structure of a
plant cell with an animal cell, as seen under
a light microscope
Cytoplasm
The structure of the cytoplasm is gel-like in consistency. It
contains organelles, structures and cytoplasmic inclusions. Its
function is to transport, maintain cell shape and structure,
protect, store macromolecules and act as the host to metabolic
processes.
Vacuole:
❖ Fluid-filled space inside a cell which
is surrounded by its own membrane.
❖ Plant cells have very large,
permanent vacuoles, which contain a
solution of sugars and other
substances called cell sap.
❖ When the vacuole is full, it presses
outward on the rest of the cell, and
helps it keep its shape.
❖ Animal cells have much smaller
vacuoles, called vesicle, which also
contain solutions.
Nucleus
❖ Largest organelle.
❖ It is exclusively found in eukaryotic cells
❖ It is responsible for storing the cell's hereditary material or the DNA.
❖ It is responsible for coordinating many of the important cellular activities
such as protein synthesis, cell division, growth and a host of other
important functions.
Chloroplast
❖ Found in most of the cells in the green parts of
plants have them.
❖ They contain the green colouring or pigment called
chlorophyll.
❖ It absorbs light energy to make food in the process
of photosynthesis.
Mitochondria:
❖ Part of the cell where aerobic respiration happens.
❖ Aerobic respiration is the main way in which cells get the energy that they
need to stay alive.
❖ The more energy a cell needs, the more mitochondria it has.
❖ Muscle cells, are packed full of mitochondria.
Ribosomes:
❖ Tiny structures found in almost all animal cells and plant
cells.
❖ They are so small that we can only see them with an
electron microscope.
❖ Ribosomes are where the cell makes proteins.
