1. READING COMPREHENSION
TEXT 1
Food was once seen as a source of sustenance and pleasure. Today, the dinner table can instead begin to feel
like a minefield. Worse still, the advice changes continually. As TV-cook Nigella Lawson recently put it: “You
can guarantee that what people think will be good for you this year, they won’t next year.” This may be
somewhat inevitable: evidence-based health advice should be constantly updated as new studies explore the
nuances of what we eat and the effects the meals have on our bodies. But when the media exaggerate the
results of a study without providing the context, it can lead to unnecessary fears that may, ironically, push you
towards less healthy choices. We’ve tried to cut through the confusion by weighing up all the available
evidence to date. You may be pleased to learn that many of your favourite foods are not the ticking time
bomb you have been led to believe.
The facts: While the World Health Organisation has announced overwhelming evidence that bacon (and other
kinds of processed meat) can contribute to colorectal cancer, the real dangers are not quite as worrying as the
subsequent headlines would have us believe. For every 100 people who stop eating bacon, only one will have
avoided cancer. To put that in perspective, consider the figures for tobacco: for every 100 smokers who give
up, 10-15 lives may be saved. The two are hardly comparable.
The facts: There is very little evidence that a cup of coffee will send you to an early grave; in fact, the opposite
may be true. In 2012, the New England Journal of Medicine reported on the health of 400,000 Americans over
the course of 13 years. The scientists found that people who drank between three and six cups a day were
around 10% less likely to die during the 13-year period, with lower rates of heart disease, stroke, diabetes and
infections. A review in 2014 painted a similar picture: people who drank four cups a day were around 16% less
likely to die at any one time. Note that these were only observational studies. Although they tried to account
for other factors, there’s no way of knowing if the coffee itself was protecting the heart, or if there’s some
other, hidden, explanation. Perhaps healthier people are just more likely to be drawn to coffee. But as
“addictions” go, it’s pretty harmless. It’s probably not the elixir of life that some claim, but based on this
evidence, you can at least savour that morning espresso with impunity.
*Sustenance: Something (in this case, food) that keeps a person alive.

From setting budget goals to finding alternative sources of cash, there are countless ways to make
your dream vacation a reality. Here are seven helpful tips (0) ________ budgeting for that vacation.
Set a price point: You should never plan a trip (11) __________ money in mind. Closely examine
your finances as well as your travel partner's. Decide how much you can realistically save in a
predetermined period of time. Once you have a number on paper, then you can decide on a savings
plan. If you discover that your once-in-a-lifetime trip is going to cost twice what you can save,
you'll need to adjust your budget.
Research your destination: You won't know what you'll need in your wallet until you do the (12)
__________. It's worthwhile* to look up everything you can. This way, nothing will (13)
__________ you by surprise. Ask friends and family who have traveled to your destination about
the costs they incurred, including accommodations, airfare and activities. Travel guides, official
tourism websites and consumer-travel resources* will also give you a general estimate* of what
you'll need.
Use budget tools: If you're not currently a budget-keeper, technology can help you become one.
The smartphone app Mint tracks expenses, manages account balances, and even gently reminds you
when bills come due. Every week, Mint sends a snapshot of your spending, (14) __________will
keep you on track for large, long-term expenses.
Look for alternative sources of income: (15) __________ sources of income can be worthwhile
ways to reach your vacation goals. (16) __________ wedding gowns can be sold via sites like
Tradesy and Once Wed. Get creative to bring in extra cash. Maybe you could sell handmade or
vintage items on eBay.
Save every single day: Downloading a budgeting app or frequently checking your bank balance
will show you where all of your money is going. Instead of mindlessly (17) __________ your debit
card, withdraw a predetermined amount of cash every Sunday and use that for your (18)
__________ purchases.
Have fun on a budget: There are literally hundreds if not thousands of free nightlife events in (19)
________ major city, every night of the week, that are as much if not more fun than those things
you were going to spend money on. Check your area for free events.
Stay inspired: Keep yourself motivated. For instance, if you're finally taking that trip to Argentina,
take a Spanish-language or tango class, or try cooking an authentic Argentinean meal. Social media
sites can also serve as great inspirational tools: On Pinterest, pin beautiful photos of your
destination and make possible itineraries of must-see (20) __________.

Many teens think they are addicted to cell phones, and they certainly act like it. In one study, teens
aged fifteen to nineteen describe themselves as addicted to their phones, and in another, 30 percent
say they're depressed when they can't use it. Cell phone use, like drugs and alcohol, may act on the
reward centers of the brain which contain opiate receptors. When the brain gets its perceived
reward—whether it's heroin, chocolate, or the fun of texting two thousand times a month on
average—it wants a do-over, again and again and again. Suddenly, a behavior is born. Psychologists
who have studied cell phone use, particularly texting, by teens, report that it is leading to anxiety,
behavioral problems, distraction in school, repetitive stress injury, and sleep deprivation.
If your teen is addicted, he's not going to stop on his own. You may need to enforce* the age-
old rule that the one who pays the bill gets to decide how and how often a phone is used. In Russia,
scientists and government officials have advised that anyone under the age of eighteen should not
use a cell phone. In France, there's a ban* against marketing mobile phones to young children. In
the United Kingdom, Sir William Stewart, chairman of the National Radiological Protection Board,
was quoted* as saying, “I don't think we can put our hands on our hearts and say mobile phones are
safe." In the United States? Not much . . . yet. In an ideal world, you would never buy your child a
cell phone. But if you did that, you might never hear the end of it because all their friends now own
them. There are studies suggesting that, in addition to brain tumors, children's cell phone use could
result in hearing loss (if they use it an hour a day or more) and the death of auditory nerve cells.
As long as parents are paying for cell use, however, you have the power of the purse. Parents of
both preteens and adolescents will need to establish clear guidelines as to their cell phone use, while
understanding your kids' needs for independence. Your children will be even safer if they obey
these rules:
• Text rather than call.
• Use a safe headset.
• No phoning or texting while driving. The U.S. Department of Transportation reports that teen
drivers on cell phones have slower reaction times than teens not on the phone while behind
the wheel. The brain hyperactivity that results may also be at the root of attention deficit
hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) in children.
• No phones in the bedroom.
• Teach kids to keep phones away from the body while they're turned on.

“Yoga puts more pressure on bone than gravity does,” he said in an interview. “By opposing
one group of muscles against another, it stimulates osteocytes, the bone-making cells.” Most
experts argue that it is difficult, perhaps impossible, for adults to gain significant bone mass. Dr.
Fishman invested his own money and with three collaborators solicited volunteers worldwide via

2015, 227 (202 of them women) followed through with doing the 12 assigned yoga poses daily or at
least every other day. The average age of the 227 participants upon joining the study was 68, and 83
percent had osteoporosis or its precursor, osteopenia.
A decade after the start of the study, the findings showed improved bone density in the spine
and femur of the 227 participants. Improvements were seen in bone density in the hip as well, but
they were not statistically significant. “Yoga looks like it’s safe, even for people who have suffered
significant bone loss,” Dr. Fishman said in an interview. The study has many limitations, but all
told, the team concluded, the results may lend support to Dr. Fishman’s long-held belief that yoga
can help reverse* bone loss. “Spinal fractures can result from poor posture, and there’s no
medication for that, but yoga is helpful,” he said.

Yoga enthusiasts link the practice to a long list of health benefits, including greater flexibility,
stronger muscles, better posture and balance, reduced emotional and physical stress, and increased
self-esteem. But definitively proving these benefits is challenging, requiring years of costly
research. A pharmaceutical company is unlikely to fund* a study that doesn’t involve a drug, and in
any event, the research requires a large group of volunteers tracked over a very long time. No one
knows these challenges better than Dr. Loren M. Fishman, a psychiatrist at Columbia University
who specializes in rehabilitative medicine. For years, he has been gathering* evidence on yoga and
bone health, hoping to determine whether yoga might be an effective therapy for osteoporosis. The
idea is not widely accepted in the medical community, but then, researchers know comparatively
little about complementary medicine in general. So in 2005, Dr. Fishman began a small pilot of
study of yoga moves. Medications can produce adverse side effects like gastrointestinal distress and
fractures of the femur.

A Is it better to rent or to buy? Each choice has its pros and cons. There are a number of reasons why
people choose to rent. First, you can move as soon as your lease is up. You don’t have to wait until
you sell your place, which can often be difficult and time-consuming. Second, the rental deposit is
usually much lower than the down payment on a place you buy. Third, the landlord takes care of
painting or fixing things. As a homeowner, you pay for these things yourself.
There are also a number of advantages to buying instead of renting. As the owner of an apartment or
a house, you can decide to sell it later, often for a higher price than you paid for it. You can also
make changes to the place you own, or remodel it, to fit your needs. Finally, since you are the
landlord, you’ll never be forced to move. So, will you rent or buy? The choice is yours!
B Dear Mike,
Awful things have been happening to my friends lately.
First, my good friend Dave is in debt and is trying very hard to make ends meet. He told me that he
had to take a loan from the bank to pay for his studies last year. Now he owes the bank $25,000! He
asked me to lend him some money to help him get out of debt. I told him that I would lend him what
I had, but that it wasn’t enough to pay back the loan. I also asked Fred to help Dave find a steady
job. Second, I received a call from Susan the other day. There was a fire in her house and it did a lot
of damage. Poor thing! She told me that she couldn’t pay anyone to fix up the house and that she had
to repair everything herself. She asked me to lend her a hammer and an electric screwdriver. I told
her that she should borrow all my tools. I said that they would all come in handy! I also invited her
to stay with me until she had fixed up everything in her house.
Please write soon and send me some good news!
Love,
Linda

tried it. Those who use online banking were asked what they think of the service. 76 %
said that the service was easy and convenient. Only 24 % said it was complicated and
time-consuming. We asked the people who have never tried online banking what their

A My name is Rita. Well, here we are in the U.S. On Monday, we arrived at one of the largest
airports in the world. The children were tired, but happy. Tony, my youngest child, was the most
excited of the three. We are staying with my friend Paula in a gorgeous house in one of the most
expensive areas. Paula tells me that some of the most successful public personalities live nearby!
Tom and I are looking for a house of our own. We’re finding out about the nicest neighborhoods
that are also the safest for young families. On Wednesday we saw a lovely house in Westside, one
of the best areas in the city. Unfortunately, Westside is also furthest from Tom’s work. We thought
of living in the downtown area, which is closest to the schools and Tom’s office, but I don’t think
it’s the most suitable neighborhood for families.

with my friend on its sunny beaches, where you can enjoy the hot Caribbean sun and beautiful

A My name is Anna. I’m expecting a baby in July. Actually, to be honest, I’m expecting two
babies. I haven’t yet gotten used to the idea of having twins. I got used to not drinking any alcohol
or coffee quite easily. I didn’t use to drink a lot of alcohol or coffee anyway. I’m even getting used
to being hungry enough to eat a horse most of the time! But I haven’t gotten used to the idea of
being a mother. I am really nervous and scared about the challenge. Although I used to do some
babysitting when I was a teenager, I am not used to caring for two little babies at the same time. My
husband says it’s very scary for him, too. He is not used to being around babies at all. He knows

B My name is Paula and I’m happy to help you with the surprise you are planning. Here are my
ideas: The party will be held at the Golden Hotel. A room could be booked in your name for next
weekend. A horseback trail ride would be arranged for Sheila at 11.00 sharp. She loves horseback
riding. It would also give us time to check on the party preparations in the Orchard Room. I might
be assisted by Olivia and Karen because there’ll be plenty to do. For example, flowers will be
delivered by the florist in the morning. Bouquets should be arranged in pretty carts all over the
room. I’ve told the girls that the surprise must be kept a secret. Gourmet meals should be served at
the party. This can be taken care of by the hotel staff. The manager says the food could be brought
to the Orchard Room at 8.00 p.m. I hope you like these plans. I’m sure Sheila won’t be
disappointed!

B Whether you plan to go on vacation alone, with family, or with friends, choosing where to go
is the most important part of planning your trip. I asked three people to choose their ideal vacation
spots. 1. My choice is the Chilean Lake District in Southern Chile. It’s famous for its beautiful
scenery, including the blue mountain lakes and volcanoes. My family and I visited some National
Parks, where we hiked in the forests and observed the volcanic landscapes and wildlife. 2. Aruba,
which is the most beautiful island in the Caribbean, is my ideal place for a vacation. I spent a month
with my friend on its sunny beaches, where you can enjoy the hot Caribbean sun and beautiful
weather year-round. The people are so friendly and welcoming too! 3. Boracay Island, where we
spent our honey moon last summer, is the perfect place for a vacation. This small, beautiful
Philippine island is famous for its white beaches and romantic sunsets. We loved snorkelling
around the island. The food there was delicious and inexpensive too.

part of planning your trip.”
