SUN
Sunlight is converted into heat that
is used to produce electricity. Solar
cells or photovoltaic cells convert
sunlight directly into electricity.
This solar cell is made of layers of
silicon. When sunlight strikes the
surface of the layers of silicon,
electrons flow across the layers.
SUN
Solar power plants turn sunlight
into electricity. Large groups of
mirrors are used to focus sunlight
on one place called the “ receiver”.
Oil or water flows to the receiver
and heated by the focused light to
a high temperature.
WIND
Energy from the sun produces wind which
is a source of power. Wind power has been
used for many centuries. Windmills have
been used to grind grains and pump
water. Sailing ships have traveled by wind
power long before they were powered by
fossil fuels. The kinetic energy of the wind
drives the wind turbines for generators to
produce electricity.
GEOTHERMAL ENERGY
There is a continuous production of heat below
the earth's crust because of the layer of hot and
molten rocks called “ magma”. Heat comes
mostly from the decay of naturally occurring
radioactive materials such as uranium and
potassium.
Geothermal power plants drill holes into the rock
to effectively capture the steam. Different types of
geothermal power plants built near volcanoes or
geothermal fields in different places on earth.
which is very “ useful to humans”

well is drilled deep into the ground and very cold water
is poured into it to force the rock layers to create new
fractures as reservoir fro underground water.
HYDROELECTRIC ENERGY
Water covers 70 percent of the earth’s surface,
and is most widely used as a renewable source
of energy. Water from waterfalls or dams has
kinetic energy that can run a turbine. There are
several hydroelectric power plants in the
Philippines some of them are the Maria Cristina
Falls in Iligan City, Lanao del Norte, Angat Dam
in Norzagaray, Bulacan; Binga Dam in Itogon,
Benguet; Pulangui in Masamag, Bukidnon; and
Magat Dam in Ramon, Isabela.
DENDROTHERMAL ENERGY
Biomass is the total amount of living things in
the environment. It comes from plants and
animals that have been living recently. Biomass
can be burned directly and used as fuel for
heating and cooking. It can be processed to
make “ BIOFUEL”. Biofuel can come from crops
like corn, or algae, which are then processed to
be used in cars. Biofuel burns more cleanly than
fossil fuels. Biomass is also used to produce
electricity in dendrothermal power plants.
NUCLEAR ENERGY
An alternative source of energy is nuclear
fission, which is the splitting of the nucleus
of an atom, during which nuclear energy is
released. The released energy is mostly in
the form of heat. This heat is used to
convert water into steam. The steam turns
the blades of the turbine in nuclear power
plants and electricity is produced.
