Suitability Mapping of Constructed Wetlands for Wastewater Treatment in

_________________________Negros Oriental, Philippines__________________________
Title of Thesis
Brief Rationale
In the recent study of Jones et al. (2021), about 50% of total wastewater globally is being
treated which is a big leap from the previous estimate of 20% in 2015. This improvement can
be attributed to the advancement of technologies and approaches in treating wastewater
especially in high-income regions. Although this is a promising result, the uneven progress in
treating wastewater across the world is still significant due to the lack of resources for treatment
facilities and rapid population growth in developing countries — like the Philippines — since
convenient types of wastewater treatment plants are expensive that can be financially
unbearable to such countries. One of the known cheaper alternative systems in treating
wastewater is Constructed Wetland (CW) which is an efficient nature-based system that is
relatively less expensive and has low operational requirement. This can give a solution to
improve the wastewater treatment in Negros Oriental through the effective adoptation of CW to
different places in the province wherein the first step involves siting suitable locations specific
to this type of technology. Furthermore, the best practice CW in the country is in Bayawan City,
Negros Oriental which will be the immediate source of information in the process of siting.
Additionally, this study can also be a basis for policy making since there is no set guidelines yet
specific to siting CW for wastewater treatment in the Philippines.

Objectives
This study generally aims to create a suitability map of constructed wetlands for
wastewater treatment in Negros Oriental, Philippines. Specifically, it aims to:
a. Identify factors based on literature and consultation with experts
b. Create maps of spatial distribution of standardized factors
c. Calculate the factor weight using AHP; and
d. Generate the suitability map using Weighted Overlay Method
Methodology
In this study, a Multicriteria Evaluation (MCE) Techniques will be applied to Geographical
Information System (GIS), specifically ArcGIS, in creating the suitability map of constructed
wetlands for wastewater treatment in Negros Oriental, Philippines. The factors that will be
considered are mainly socioeconomic, which are Land Use, Distance to Water Bodies, Distance
to Population Center, Slope, and Soil Type. Other categories will be made as restrictions to
determine areas that must be excluded from the analysis. In this case, the bases of buffer zones
are surface water, natural wetlands, privately owned areas, protected areas, airports, and active
faults. In assignation of weight per factor, Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP) will be integrated
in the analysis, wherein in the process of deciding and calculating, a guidance from an expert
in the field will be needed. Moreover, base data will be from public database like Geoportal
Philippines and United States Geological Survey (USGS).
