LESSON 1: FUNCTIONS AND RELATIONS

FUNCTIONS

-Are used to estimate values, stimulate processes, and discover relationships.

-Is a relation where each element in the domain is related to only one value in the range by some rule.

-The elements of the domain can be imagined as input to a machine that applies a rule so that each
input corresponds to only one output.

-Is the relationhip between two variables such that to each value of the independent variable there
corresponds exactly one value of the dependent variable.

RELATION

-A relation is a rule values from a set of values called the domain to a second set of values called the
range.

-A relation is also a set of ordered pairs.

DOMAIN

-Is a set of all values (inputs) of the independent variable for which the function is defined (x)

RANGE

-Set of all values (outputs) or the dependent variable y

EXAMPLE

1.{(2,3), (4,5),(6,6)}=Function

Domain:2,4,6

Range:3,5,6

2.{(3,5), (4,5),(4,6)}= Not function

Domain:3,4

Range:5,6

3.{(-2,-2), (-1,-1), (2,0), (1,1)}=Function

Domain:-2,-1,2,1

Range:-2,-1,0,1

4.{(-6,-6). (-4,-4), (-2,-2), (0,0)}= Function

Domain=-6,-4,-2,0

Range=-6,-4,-2,0
LESSON II-Evaluate each functiom at the indicated values of the independent variable and simplify the
result.

1.f(x)=9-6x a.f(-1) b.f(1)

a.f(-1)=9-6(-1) b.f(1)=9-6(1)

=9-(-6) =9-6

2.f(x)=x+4 a.f(2) b.f(-3)

a.f(2)=2+4 b.f(-3)=(-3)+4

=3 -3

=-1

LESSON III: OPERATIONS ON FUNCTIONS

1.(f+g) (x) 2.(f.g)(x) 3.(hog)(-2)=2x2 4.(fog)(2)

=3x+4+X-1 (3x+4)(x-1) 2(2)2-4 3x2+x-4

=4x+3 =3x2+x-4 2(4)-4 3(2)2+2-4

8-4 3(4)+2-4

=4 12+12-4

LESSON IV: COMPOSITION OF FUNCTION

1.(fog)x=3x (fog)(-1/2)=3(-1/2)-15 (gof)(x)-x-5

=3(x-5) =-3/2 -15 =3x-5

=3x-15 =-33

EXPONENTIAL FUNCTIONS

A.COMPOUND INTEREST

Example 1: After 5 years of interested payments of 5 1 2 % compounded quarterly, an account has PHP
5046.02. What was the principal?
Step 1: Identify the known variables.
Remember that the rate must be in decimal form and n is the number of compoundings per year.
Since this situation has quarterly compounding there are 4 compoundings per year.
A = PHP 5046.02 Account balance
P=? Principal
r = 0.055 Decimal form
n = 4 No. compound.
t = 5 No. of years
Step 2: Substitute the known values.
5046.02=P ( 1+ 0.055 4 ) ( 4 )( 5 )
Step 3: Solve for P.
5046.02 = P(1.01375)20 Original
5046.02 1.01375 20 =P Divide
P = PHP 3840.00

B.EXPONENTIAL GROWTH AND DECAY

POPULATION GROWTH
Example: 2 months ago you had 3 mice, you now have 18.
Assuming the growth continues like that
What is the "k" value?
How many mice 2 Months from now?
How many mice 1 Year from now?
Start with the formula:
y(t) = a × ekt
We know a=3 mice, t=2 months, and right now y(2)=18 mice:
18 = 3 × e2k
Now some algebra to solve for k:
Divide both sides by 3: 6 = e2k
Take the natural logarithm of both sides: ln(6) = ln(e2k)
ln(ex)=x, so: ln(6) = 2k
Swap sides: 2k = ln(6)
Divide by 2: k = ln(6)/2
The step where we used ln(ex)=x is explained more at Exponents and Logarithms.
Note: we can calculate k ≈ 0.896, but it is best to keep it as k = ln(6)/2 until we do our final calculations.
We can now put k = ln(6)/2 into our formula (also a=3):
y(t) = 3 e(ln(6)/2)t
Now let's calclulate the population in 2 more months (at t=4 months):
y(4) = 3 e(ln(6)/2)×4 = 108
And in 1 year from now (t=14 months):
y(14) = 3 e(ln(6)/2)×14 = 839,808

DEPRECIATION
1.Calvary bought a new car at a cost of Php 2o,000. The car depreciates approximately 15% of its value
each year. What will be car be worth in 10 years?
a.PHP 20,000
r.15% OR 1.5
t.10 years
Find;y
Solution
y=a(1-r)t
=20,000(1-0.15)10
=20,000(0.85)10
=20,000(0.1968744043)
C.OTHER MODELS OF EXPONENTIAL GROWTH AND DECAY
1.The growth of a population of bacteria is given by the equation N=7500x2t
Where N is number of the bacteria after t hours?
a.What is the initial number of bacteria?
Solution;
Substitute:t=0
N=7500x2t
=7500x28
=7500x1
The bacterial culture began with 7500 bacteria
