Course Description & COURSE DESCRIPTION

Overview Chemistry 1 is designed to enable all students to acquire an understanding of how
chemical theory is developed and how a chemist thinks and works. Students investigate
the composition, properties, and reactions of matter. The approach is inductive and
mathematical, as well as conceptual. Laboratory experiments and subsequent
classroom analysis are integral components of the course. All Virginia Standards of
Learning are addressed in this course. Successful completion of Algebra 1 is required for
this course.

COURSE OVERVIEW
The course is based on laboratory work, as well as lecture, group work, projects, and
assignments. The topics of study include atomic structure, ionic and covalent
compounds, stoichiometry, gasses, solutions, and acids and bases.

Course Materials MATERIALS

Students should come to class with the following:
● FCPS issued laptop and charger
● 3 ring binder
● Tab dividers
● Loose leaf paper
● pencil or pen
● Scientific calculator*
*No personal phones/laptops will be allowed as a substitute to a calculator.

● Be on time to class! Be present and ready to work when the bell rings.
● Bring all necessary supplies and a fully powered laptop.

Final Grade Calculation Quarterly Gradebook:

This class uses a quarterly gradebook. Students will receive a quarter grade based on
performance in the individual quarter and start over at the beginning of each quarter.
Final grades are determined by an average of quarter grades and a final exam.
Quarter 1 - 20%
Quarter 2 - 20%
Quarter 3 - 20%
Quarter 4 - 20%
Final Exam - 20%
Total - 100%

Remediation and Retake Students will have one opportunity to retake summative assessments to achieve a
Policy higher grade and demonstrate learning. Retakes will replace the previous grade, up to
100%. When a student retakes an assessment and receives a lower grade, the higher of
the two attempts will stand. Students will need to plan remediation time with teachers
to ensure they are keeping up with regularly scheduled homework and are able to
remediate assessments.
Students will have an opportunity to retake assessments after participating in a
remediation action plan which may include, but not limited to, test corrections, video
note-taking and extra practice. Remediation and reassessment may occur during Learn
Periods, Return Periods, or by appointment. To be eligible for a reassessment, the
remediation requirements must be reached, along with the highly recommended action
of having all classwork completed before the original assessment.
Smaller formatives that are taken in class will not have reassessment opportunities.

Late Work Policy DEADLINES AND MAKE-UP WORK

It is expected that students will make up work following any absence and teachers will
help the student identify missed work. The majority of make-up work will be found in
Schoology. If there is any question about make-up work, the student should contact the
individual teacher. Completion of make-up work is encouraged so that students will be
prepared for future instruction.
For missed assignments not due to an excused absence, students are still expected to
complete all the assignments in a timely manner. Late work will be accepted for all
assignments if submitted within two weeks of the due date. Work submitted late will
receive a late work penalty of 10%. Students who do not attempt assignments will
receive a 50% on any assignment that is not submitted.

Dear Parents/Guardians,
Please take a few minutes to read and discuss this syllabus with your child. After reviewing it, please
acknowledge with your signature below and have your child return this page, along with the FCPS Science
Safety Agreement, to the classroom.
To help your child be successful this school year, work with your child and be aware of assignments he/she is
working on in class. Check Schoology and be in contact with your child’s teacher on a regular basis. Encourage
him/her to seek academic help when necessary, especially before large assessments or assignments are due.
Thank you for your support and please email if I can assist you in any way to make Chemistry 1 a positive
experience for your child this school year. I look forward to meeting you for our Back-to-School Night on
Tuesday, September 10, 2024.

Sincerely,
The Marshall Chemistry 1 Team
