Introductory Message

This Self-Learning Module (SLM) is prepared so that you, our dear learners, can
continue your studies and learn while at home. Activities, questions, directions,
exercises, and discussions are carefully stated for you to understand each lesson.

Each SLM is composed of different parts. Each part shall guide you step-by-step as
you discover and understand the lesson prepared for you.

Pre-tests are provided to measure your prior knowledge on lessons in each SLM. This
will tell you if you need to proceed on completing this module or if you need to ask
your facilitator or your teacher’s assistance for better understanding of the lesson.
At the end of each module, you need to answer the post-test to self-check your
learning. Answer keys are provided for each activity and test. We trust that you will
be honest in using these.

In addition to the material in the main text, Notes to the Teacher are also provided
to our facilitators and parents for strategies and reminders on how they can best
help you on your home-based learning.

Please use this module with care. Do not put unnecessary marks on any part of this
SLM. Use a separate sheet of paper in answering the exercises and tests. And read
the instructions carefully before performing each task.

If you have any questions in using this SLM or any difficulty in answering the tasks
in this module, do not hesitate to consult your teacher or facilitator.

What I Need to Know

This lesson will discuss the health, sociocultural, psychological, legal, and
economic dimensions of substance use and abuse.

Before we start with the ‘lesson’ we will have a warm-up activity which will
prepare you for the lesson proper.

Activity 1: Complete the table

family.

What’s New

The substance use and abuse have a big role about the health of an individual,
the socio-cultural values of the people, and the psychological effect of drugs to
oneself. The relationship within our authorities in the community and most
especially the economic growth of our community may also get affected due to low of
manpower production and loss of government funds because of drug-related
operation, treatment and rehabilitation.

This activity will let you discover how it will destroy our community.

Activity 2: Venn diagram


Fill out the Venn diagram to show the similarities and differences between the
socio-cultural values and psychological effects of the substance use and abuse.

1. How did you find the activity?
2. What have you discovered while having survey/research?
3. Is the community/authority having a hard time in solving the problem about
drug abuse?
4. What do you think is the reason in the delay of solving problems about drug
abuse?

What Is It

Activity 3: What’s the Issue

1. Choose from health, socio-cultural, psychological, legal, and economic


issue/problem about the drug abuse.
2. Identify the causes and effects of drug abuse in health, sociocultural,
psychological, legal, and economic issues
3. Ways to manage or solve the issue/problem concern on drug abuse
4. Create a chart that will show the information identified

How will you explain the health, socio-cultural, psychological, legal, and
economic dimensions to substance use and abuse?

1. Health - because of drug abuse, health will be at stake, and it’s because of
the rampant abuse of drugs. The physical aspect of an individual will function
abnormally.
2. Socio-cultural – drug has its big contribution with the change of an individual
values to the society. The common characteristics in the community will
become uncommon. The norms, custom, attitude, respect are being vanished.
3. Psychological – Psychology is the study of person’s behavior. It generally
meant to describe the emotional and mental process that is associated with
the development of human brain. Through drug abuse, the normal process of
the human system will be affected. Because drugs are chemical substance
that can alter the mind and body.
4. Legal – it is against the law to possess, make, use, import, or sell drugs.
Penalties for violating various aspects of the law, will become hunted by the
authority.
5. Economic –It will affect economy in terms of low manpower production, lessen
job opportunities and poverty.

What’s More

This part includes performance tasks for the students which is poem
writing, song, cartoon character drawing and poster making for the first
activity. The second activity is to make a collage for drug use and abuse. The
learners will do the written and performance activity through modular
learning modality.
The health of an individual, sociocultural values, psychological
function, legal authorities, and economic growth will take are part as the
activity for the learners.

Activity 13: Drugs Abuse as burden to the world

1. Think of a creative way of showing how drugs are burden to our health,
socio-cultural, psychological, legal and economic status.
2. You may write a poem, a song, draw a cartoon, poster, etc.
3. Share to the class your literary work
4. Have your teacher check it.

Activity 14: Drug Collage

1. Group activity with your family members


2. Make a drug collage showing how drugs are dangerous to health,
sociocultural, psychological, legal, and economic growth.
3. Write an Essay explaining your collage
4. Prepare for a short presentation on your work

Summary

Drugs by nature are good because it makes us feel better, it treats our illnesses,
help calm down patients with mental disorders or relieve patient’s pain and suffering.
The rampant use of drugs may result to a bad, harmful or dangerous effect to oneself,
family, school, and community. It also gives a burden to health, sociocultural,
psychological, legal, and economic dimensions.
Various risk of drug use has been discovered by medical science. These risks
are called effects. Effects are either short-term or long-term. One of the effects of
drugs particularly those injected into the blood stream is the risk of HIV-AIDS
contamination. HIV-AIDS in the Philippines is continuously growing and posing
threat to every Filipino. We must move now and make a difference to give our
children hope of living a better life tomorrow.
